SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Discovery Bay), chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, issued the following statement today after U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos testified before Congress in defense of a Trump administration proposal to cut all Education Department funding for Special Olympics.
“I am deeply disappointed that the federal government is proposing to completely cut the Special Olympics out of the Education budget. Secretary DeVos said in her testimony they had to make some difficult decisions. I question why it is difficult to retain a modest amount – under $18 million – in the budget for a successful program that benefits hundreds of thousands of Americans who are among the most vulnerable members of our society. I agree with East Bay Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s assessment at the hearing, these proposed cuts go after disabled children and are appalling. Through the Special Olympics, children and adults with intellectual disabilities discover the power of sports along with new strengths, abilities and confidence. The Special Olympics is the leading voice in raising awareness about the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities, and identifies the pressing issues facing these most vulnerable members of our community. I ask that California’s entire Congressional delegation join with Rep. Lee to oppose these proposed cuts.”
Assemblymember Frazier represents the 11th Assembly District, which encompasses a large cross section of the Delta in Central Solano, Eastern Contra Costa and Southern Sacramento counties, and includes the communities of Antioch, Bethel Island, Birds Landing, Brentwood, Byron, Collinsville, Discovery Bay, Fairfield, Isleton, Knightsen, Locke, Oakley, Pittsburg (partial), Rio Vista, Suisun City, Travis AFB, Vacaville and Walnut Grove.

We must at some point start thinking about reducing the 22 trillion debt. Unfortunately something must change. Did you know Sesame Street gets federal funding yet makes millions off of the muppets in sales?
Who would pick on Elmo? Yet Elmo is taking from the taxpayers as it profits on the dolls.
Tough choice, if you have a better idea , like print more money or go socialist where everything is free.
