Elk Grove Unified Closes School, Cancels Classes and Student-Related Activities Due to Coronavirus

by ECT

ELK GROVE, Calif.  – The public’s health and safety is paramount to Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) and all of its community and educational partners. Friday evening, the Sacramento County Public Health Department (SCPH) confirmed that an EGUSD family was put on quarantine because of testing positive for COVID-19. After careful consideration and in light of the new information, effective immediately, the District will close its schools, cancel classes and any student-related activities from today, March 7 – March 13, 2020.

Please know that to date, no student or staff has tested positive for COVID-19.

At this time, Elk Grove Unified asks parents to make arrangements for their student(s) for March 7 – March 13, 2020 as all EGUSD schools will be closed, classes will be canceled and any student-related activities will also be canceled. An update on whether the school closures will be extended will be provided by the end of the day, Thursday, March 12, 2020.

This complex decision involved close collaboration and coordination with EGUSD Board of Trustees, labor groups, the Sacramento County Office of Education and the Sacramento County Public Health Department. We will be working closely with multiple community partners to coordinate and adjust planned events as needed. We will also move up our April Traditional/Modified Traditional Spring Break to the week of March 9 – March 13, 2020 to minimize the impact to student learning and any loss of school days. Future adjustments to the school calendar may need to be made.

We understand there are many concerns around COVID-19 and want to ensure families that we are working closely with SCPH for updates and guidance. For the latest information on COVID-19, families are encouraged to visit our EGUSD website, the SCPH webpage dedicated to COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus), and the CDC homepage.

For parent questions regarding this closure, please contact our Safety and Security at (916) 686-7786.

For media inquiries regarding this closure, Elk Grove Unified School District officials will hold a press conference at 2:45 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Office (Robert L. Trigg Education Center) 9510 Elk Grove Florin Road, Elk Grove, 95624.
