Editorial: The Blame Game, Shooting the Messenger

by ECT

In recent days, Antioch residents have become increasing aware of just how negative social media has become towards the City of Antioch. Some are now calling for the negative behavior online to stop and to instead begin working on solutions.

We agree!

Antioch resident Kip Stephens spoke beautifully to the city council on last Tuesday about the need for residents to re-focus from negativity to becoming part of the solution. Trine Gallegos followed up with a nice article in the Contra Costa Times about how whenever “Antioch” is mentioned, negativity follows.

A person posted "I blame you for this article"

A person posted “I blame you for this article”

After her article was published, our inbox and email was filled with people making the assumption Gallegos was referring to us—she 100% says it was not aimed at us when we asked her about it. We then received more emails about the article and then a few who blamed us for the negativity about Antioch on social media.

In fact, one person wrote “I blame you for this article.”

The truth is, we rarely censor opinions and loosely monitor our Facebook page. This is by design as we want to be a place where people have an outlet to discuss different ideas, opinions and get their information. Everyone has a right to their opinion, whether or not we agree with them or not.

As for the blame, let’s first go back to July of 2012 when we launched. The goal was to provide a news service at no cost to our readers to update the public on what was transpiring around East Contra Costa whether it is good news or bad news. In 2012, the public was not aware just how much crime was occurring.

It’s no secret we made the choice to heavily focus on police and fire activity—it’s also no secret we support police, fire, paramedics and military. Some people do not like that, but it’s the foundation of our site culture to support good behavior. After all, should we applaud the criminals and people behaving badly?

We think not.

We cover police and fire incidents in real time and post it on social media. The result is the community knows what is going on and do not have to wonder what all the sirens are for. It also opens up incidents for discussion promoting transparency. The comments create a dialogue which not everyone agrees—sometimes, the comments are offensive and sometimes we even have to remove them or ban users.

On social media, we allow comments of all opinions whether we agree or disagree; we try our best not to censor unless there is profanity or if it’s just flat out inappropriate. Some would like more censorship, some want less, while some suggest we allow no comments at all. We do our best to be somewhere in the middle.

ECT-Facebook-LikesIn less than two years, we have more than 43,500 Facebook followers—more than the Contra Costa Times, Antioch Herald, Brentwood Press and Delta Sun Times combined.

To monitor 43.500 opinions would require a full time moderator if not more—we admit we are not interested in babysitting for political correctness which at best is subjective to 43,500 different people.  We refuse to invest a lot of time babysitting what people may say or think and instead focusing our time on producing information that is useful to the public who then can take it for what its worth.

While Antioch has received negative publicity on social media, we reject the idea that we are the reason for the way people think. What we are reporting is in response to the culture the Antioch City Leadership has created for itself. EastCountyToday does not manage the City Manager, its staffing, its police department and certainly have no say in what the City Council does.

APDCrime7 July 2014For example, in 2011, Antioch Police had 126 sworn officers before the economic downturn. Today, it sits around 87 officers. Rather than make more difficult cuts on “popular items”, the City cut its police force and today Antioch is paying the price.

If Antioch is unhappy with its image, perhaps a change in leadership is needed. Perhaps staffing needs to be changed out. The reality is the City leadership is disconnected from its residents.

EastCountyToday produces the news that is real and people respond to it. We do not control who is committing crimes, where they commit them or when they do it. We simply report what is transpiring.
We also report off the scanner. With dozens of people also listening, if we mess up, and sometimes we do, we will get called out on it rather quickly and fix it–this is why we appreciate our audience as they are engaged as much as we are.

Unfortunately sometimes people do go negative because there is nothing they can do in that moment in time.

We believe residents of Antioch do have a right to be negative if they wish just as those who want to be positive have that same right. If people do not wish to read the comments, take the information for what it is, and ignore the comments on social media—but its reality and we choose not to live in a bubble with our heads in the sand as the negative comments do have a value.

Yes, we will repeat that they do have a value because any “doer” or engaged elected official who is paying attention has a wealth of information at their fingertips and could get a pulse of the community in an instance. Listen to what people are saying, form partnerships, then work to make changes.

What the community needs to understand is we are not traditional news media nor do we claim to be or want to be. We consider ourselves a hybrid hyper-local news media service creating content that is accurate, timely and engaging.

Blaming EastCountyToday for the negativity within Antioch is the easy thing to do—we are low hanging fruit and we get that. We provide an outlet for people to express opinions that not everyone agrees with. But what we will not apologize for is producing content that is alerting the public to what has transpired in Antioch over the past two years.

This site was created with long-term objectives to create a better Antioch where residents are informed and out of the dark from what is going on. An informed citizen can help push the city to better decisions and place better elected officials into office.
Antioch-PoopIf we really wanted to trash Antioch has some suggest and promote hatred, we would focus all of our time in being copy cats to Stanley Roberts “People Behaving Badly”.

If we were to go there, we would post some of the very negative photographs being shared on Cleaning Up Antioch One Home at a Time (Facebook Page) —including this photo of a person using a garbage can as a restroom. We refused to post it at the time it occurred.

This photograph likely would have received hundreds of comments, a ton of shares, and brought traffic to both our website and social media sites. Some even criticized us for not showing it.

Why we did not show it was because no one bothered to call the police department or make a report or to allow them a chance to respond. People were focused on snapping the photograph and blasting it on social media.  In the end, we found out this man who everyone criticized and gave Antioch yet another black eye has a form of mental illness.

KRON-AntiochIf we truly wanted to embarrass Antioch, we could become like KRON 4 and post peoples Twitter Messages on our stories for entertainment purposes. Just last week, during a 500-acre fire KRON news ridiculously posted these twitter comments during a live breaking news segment on that fire while firefighters were out on the lines protecting a community.

Unlike KRON, we actually live in East Contra Costa County and care. We are not in it for ratings or exposure. We actually hope KRON fired whoever approved posting these tweets.

For change to occur, Antioch resident’s first need to be aware a problem exists instead of sold a bill of goods during election time by fancy marketing of how any one person can change the city—one person can’t change the city because they need 3-votes. The truth is, not even the council can change the city, it’s going to be the people of Antioch who drive the change and everyone doing what they can to demand more of its family, friends, neighbors, and out of town guests.

For example, when a teen is caught stealing, it’s easy to go negative with one liners and degrading Antioch comments, but a few bad apples should not ruin an entire cities image. Maybe the focus should turn from negative to how can we help prevent this person from stealing in the future? Does the teen have a mentor, an activity, a support system? Only then, will he realize the error of his ways.

One a problem is identified, only then can solutions be vetted and implemented.

As for the negative comments on social media, we encourage folks to be self-aware of what they are actually posting—it’s not like a website where you are anonymous, on Facebook, we know who you are and can click on your profile and learn all about you. Use the grandma rule when posting. If you wouldn’t want her to see it, you probably shouldn’t post it.

It’s nice to see people like Kip Stephens and Trine Gallegos speaking out publicly on stopping with the negative and instead focusing on being part of a greater solution. We hope this is just the first of many to create a movement of re-enforcing positive behavior.

In the meantime, remember we are only the messenger and in no way do we create the negativity nor endorse it. We simply provide the information at no cost to our readers—although we do accept donations.

For Antioch to change, both its city leadership and residents have to come together for something to work. If one is giving more than the other, it’s going to turn out bad because its emotional, taxing, and a lot is at stake.

Thank you to East County Today for the terrific job you have done since your inception. Do not succumb to pressure particularly from the disjointed leadership of Antioch. Leadership and staff are disconnected from the residents and some unfortunately are following a single one note drummer. Your statement “If Antioch is unhappy with its image perhaps a change in leadership is needed” is so true.

I call BS. You provide a platform, monitor it. You can’t control comments, then hire someone to do it. Take responsibility for your service, do not throw it back on the users.

I agree with someone of this but in the end, you are responsible for comments posted on your own social media and website. Face it, you are to blame for Antioch getting a bad rep because you report all the negative crime. With the public now aware, the council is failing the public by not addressing it.

Area925 Jun 29, 2015 - 11:59 am

Well, just how much “positive” crime is happening in Antioch anyways? I for one do NOT want to read a news site that censors it’s posters. We are all entitled to our opinion, good and bad. You seem to just want the bad removed for your benefit. I have seen several positive articles on this site regarding Antioch as well, so I do not believe Eastcounty is trying to bash the town. Face it, there IS more crime in Antioch now, I grew up it Pittsburg and it was then the “dregs” of the area, but they have changed that now too, the city worked and cleaned up pretty nicely. You can point your finger all you want, but the city itself needs to get to work!

In response to Voter925, I’m in agreement with ECT that it is simply not possible to monitor over 43,000 followers on Facebook. What East County Today is doing is simply reporting what is going on, it is not to blame for Antioch getting a bad reputation. That blame belongs to the individuals operating the way they do.
In my eye, this is simply a situation of an under-staffed Police Department, that is working as hard as they can, but is not able to be proactive. The City Council is going to have to get on this quickly because the exodus of good people leaving is only going to worsen the problem.
Antioch is in a beautiful location, on the river, in the shadow of Mt. Diablo and the City Council needs to make some hard choices to stop the decay that will spread.

I do think that some of the negative Antioch stuff is ECT’s fault but not for why you think…. I think we are seeing more negative stories about Antioch because ECT has been so successful at pulling back the curtain that OTHER media sources couldn’t be bothered to cover historically.

The “traditional media” just didn’t cover us because our numbers just weren’t worth it to them until recently when they started watching ECT’s astronomical rise. He is approaching 44,000 likes in an area where he covers primarily three cities with a total population of 200,300 (Antioch 107100, Brentwood 55000, Oakley 38200). If all those followers were from one of those three cities that would mean that he is actively engaging (they have liked him!) almost 22% of the community. I am sure it isn’t that high as I see comments from people that live outside the area. Still, even if only half of those actively engaged on his facebook and web page are from those three cities that would mean 11% of the community are getting information from ECT. That is more people than vote in some elections. ECT is pretty powerful.

So now the other media sources are coming in and covering more sensational stories- thus the stories tend to be the scarier, sadder, more negative stories.

When I read Trine’s article I actually thought of the Rowena Coatsee article in the CCTimes recently or the story by the local news station covering a drive-by shooting in Bay Point as being in Antioch. Those are far more negative as it was characterizing Antioch as a bad place. ECT doesn’t characterize Antioch, it reports what is going on and people comment on those things. It’s also the negative comments that characterize Antioch.

Those that want to blame EastCountyToday online in my mind either have an agenda of supporting another media source, just want to bitch at ECT, or are too ignorant to realize that it is not the person reporting the news that is creating the problems. I also think ECT has pissed a lot of the folks off that are supposed to be accountable for the problems in Antioch and surrounding communities. They want to undermine ECT because it is easier to blame ECT than to admit they have been slacking.

Hey CC Times! You have been around a long time! If you were doing your job ECT wouldn’t have had a chance. Hey Other LOCAL papers- For years I have been getting those weekly papers and there is no news, just old stories that were relevant a week ago. If you are only weekly give me substance- you have the seconds it takes me to walk from the driveway to the recycling for me to decide if I am going to take that rubber band off and read the front cover. Most of the time the rubber band doesn’t come off and your paper just gets put in the blue tote. And for the TV stations covering us- please get your facts right and please balance your coverage so it isn’t always negative.

And for those of you that want more positive, start at home….Clean your yards, pick up trash in your neighborhoods, teach your children better, make sure your children are doing productive activities, participate in local nonprofits, local government &/or the chamber of commerce. Remember that your behavior online and in public represents where you live. If someone is acting out, don’t bitch about it online- report it to the police or appropriate authorities and start creating solutions, demand solutions and praise those that are being constructive towards solutions!

Trine’s editorial was a shout out to all to tone down the negativity. She was DOING something.

This website stepped out a few years ago to help SHOW people what is really going on in our community- they aren’t creating the crime and bad stuff that is going on they are only reporting on it so that we all can decide if that is acceptable. If it isn’t acceptable do something, don’t sit online and complain about it!

The problem with Antioch is that there are a lot of parts that are not working together and things are declining as a result:

The police force isn’t big enough for the issues it has.
The mayor is a politician rather than a leader. The council is following staff recommendations rather than demanding bold action.
County, state & federal representatives aren’t coming in and creating better resources to support efforts to improve conditions.
The school district is overwhelmed by a population of students that need more interventions and are just flying under the radar without getting control of things.
The business community is just surviving and are having a hard time influencing all the agencies to do better.
The citizens aren’t informed enough on how things work & who does what and don’t seem to realize that change starts at home. There isn’t enough citizenry engaged and demanding more from everybody that can change things.

And lastly, if you don’t like what you are reading or watching on any media source stop watching or reading and go to a different source but please understand that could be the equivalent of burying your head in the sand. ECT is meeting a lot of people’s needs and I am grateful that when I want to know what is going on I can go to ECT.

Julio Jun 29, 2015 - 11:16 am

ECT is the only one reporting on anything. Antioch had a bad rep long before ECT came along. I have been here 50 years and ECT is not responsible for Antioch being call anything. In the 60’s there were some pretty bad names….all along the way. Every group of high schoolers had their own horrible names for Antioch.

I am the administrator for the page that was mentioned in this article, Cleaning Up Antioch, One Home At A Time and More. The page was designed to help the citizens of Antioch on where to go for help in cleaning up illegal dumping, graffiti and much more. We have many volunteer’s that go out on their own and clean up up garbage, cover up graffiti and etc. These are citizens that do not get paid for their efforts, or do they want too. These are just people like you and me that care for our city and make to make it great again. As for the photo, it was removed, but has been shown on other pages that I have no control of. I do believe that this page has done many great things for Antioch and will continue to make information available to the public. Do the negative comments hurt people and the city? Yes they do, but how will people know there is a problem, if they don’t know about the problem’s and how to make a difference. That’s what my page is about. People going out and doing something, instead of just complaining.

Mike Burkholder has done a fantastic job building up EastCountyToday.net and the ECT Facebook page (which has more real-time events). He is only reporting what is happening – the good and the bad. That is what he should be doing. He’s make more people aware in this Internet age of instant news of happenings in Antioch and other East County communities.Likewise,

Cleaning Up Antioch – One House at a Time on Facebook has residents reporting graffiti, trash dumped on public property, providing resource information as to who to call, and more importantly, getting good residents involved in addressing those issues.

Both provide useful information. Mike has provided a great open forum and considering the number of followers he has, the best he can do is ban individuals who abuse the forums.

One (or a few) negative pictures do not define the great work you are doing. CUAOHAATM is a wonderful resource for Antioch. Thank you.

Sean Maguid Jun 29, 2015 - 1:29 pm

The negative comments on ETC are analogous to rubber neckers on the highway. They do nothing to improve the situation, the impact is reflected back in traffic, and in the split second viewing of the incident, opinions (often wrong) are generated which also do nothing to improve the situation.

I visit ECT every day because the staff do a great job providing news on what is happening in my city (Antioch). I agree with everything the opinion piece wrote except that KRON 4 news should not be taken seriously as a news outlet and the author shouldn’t even bother mentioning them in the opinion piece.

When I was growing up in the 90’s, KRON 4 was affiliated with NBC and was a respectable local news outlet. Ever since KRON 4 is no longer affiliated with NBC while going through bankruptcy, the professionalism at that station has sunk to its lowest point. Stanley Roberts “People Behaving Badly” segment is one of many examples of that.

Chris Coles-Morales Jun 29, 2015 - 4:02 pm

Seriously the internet trolls are just so darn obnoxious. Mike, you do a great job of helping to keep people in the loop as to what is going on in and around East County. Who else would do this? Hmmmm, Nope nobody else comes to mind. We need to have the news, negative or positive put out there. Yes, Antioch needs to change from the top on down till it is fixed. Nothing new in that respect. Yes we get negative news from other media sources. So what. If you do not like it, change it. Be the change, Start a neighborhood watch group or join one. Take out the trash and clean up around your neighborhood. Walk the parks. Help out by doing your part without anyone telling you too. That is the message that reporter was talking about. It is the same song and dance that has been going on for quite some time now.
I say it is time to get off your high horse and to stop thinking that it is somone else’s job to fix or pick up or clean up. Do it yourself.

Neutral truth gains respect Jun 30, 2015 - 2:29 pm

I think it is so juvenile to criticize other media. We all know that ALL media has an agenda. First it’s money then it’s power of influence and finally it’s influenced by special interest powers.
