East County Events: September 13 and Beyond

This weekend will be all about Oakley as they host their Heart of Oakley Festival while East Bay Regional Park District will host two events at Big Break Regional Shoreline. Congressman McNerney will also be in Oakley hosting his Congress “Congress At Your Corner”.

Later in the evening, you could make your way out to Discovery Bay for a Concert on the Bay where Forejour, a tribute band to Foreigner and Journey will be playing.

Just a reminder, next week is Coastal Cleanup and both the Arts & Cultural Foundation of Antioch  and the Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed are looking for sign ups.


 

Heart of Oakley

The City of Oakley’s Heart of Oakley Festival will kick off with a Ribbon Cutting and inauguration of our Downtown Civic Center Stage and Amphitheater at 11:00 a.m.

The new additions to the Civic Park include: amphitheater style seating, stage and stage cover, a restroom/snack shack building and enhanced, landscaping, irrigation and lighting.

After the Ribbon Cutting stick around for the Heart of Oakley Festival which will include over 50 booths where you’ll be able to buy items and learn more about a local non‐profits.

Sept. 13: Heart of Oakley Festival
Experience the Place the Families in the Heart of the Delta on the Second Saturday of September as we celebrate Oakley’s viticulture. This family friendly event features wine tasting,  gourmet food trucks, arts and crafts vendors, a community stage and more.

Brownstone Fitness

Brownstone Gardens Bridal Boot Camp
Open to the public, this free event begins workouts on Saturdays from 8:00 to 9:00 am throughout the summer and into the fall. The series will be led by Mary and Brandon Collins, independent Beachbody Coaches. Participants need to bring a Yoga mat, towel, and water bottle.  Brownstone Gardens is located at 91 Brownstone Road in Oakley.

Animals vs. Humans. Join us as we compare how far our participants can jump compared to how far we know a grasshopper can jump. Can you run faster than a bird can fly? Let?s compare the facts. This is a drop in event from 2:00-3:00pm at the Big Break Visitor Center at the Delta, 69 Big Break Rd in Oakley CA.

John Muir Interpretive Center

Join Fire, food gathering and preparing, and tool making were survival skills the native people mastered to survive. Join Naturalist Briana Moore as she shares the history and skills of the native people who lived in the Los Vaqueros area. Learn fire making, acorn grinding and cordage making

DB Concert on the Bay

Concert on the Bay at the Discovery Bay Community Center
Join the Discovery Bay Lions Club as they present a free concert from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Discovery Bay Community Center located at 1601 Discovery Bay Blvd. The event will feature Forejour, a tribute band to Foreigner and Journey. You are encouraged to bring the kids, friends, chairs, and blankets.

Congressman McNerney to Host “Congress At Your Corner” in Oakley
Congressman Jerry McNerney announced today that he will host a “Congress at Your Corner” on Saturday, September 13  from 1pm to 2pm at Oakley City Hall,  located at 3231 Main Street. Rep. McNerney will meet with individuals based on the order in which they arrive.

Congressman McNerney’s staff will be on hand outside City Hall to direct constituents to the meeting room.

Chad Robichax to Speak at Neighborhood Church

Former MMA World Champion, Chad Robichaux will speak at Neighborhood Church,  50 Birch Street in Brentwood, on Sunday, September 14th, and will share his story in the 9:00am and 11:00am services.  The public is welcome, and veterans are especially welcome. Chad’s message is not just one of success and overcoming but of finding your true purpose in life.

With a 2nd Degree Black Belt (Jui Jitsu) Professor “Robo” has fought with Strike Force, Bellator, Legacy and most recently the World Series of Fighting on NBC Sports Network and has a record is 19-2 in MMA.

As U.S. Marine he served 6 Afghanistan Tours with USMC Special Operations Command going behind enemy lines. Like many Veterans he found himself struggling with war’s aftermath at home. He established Mighty Oaks Foundation in 2011 to reach out to fellow warriors and get them the foothold they need in life to find their true purpose.

Sept. 14:  the East Bay Regional Park District will host their Second Sunday in the Park at Big Break Visitor Center at the Delta last night with a “Beneath the Waves” night. The event will begin at 6:30 pm and includes games, a campfire along with s’mores and popcorn for visitors.

The event is located at the Big Break Visitor Center at the Delta, 69 Big Break Rd in Oakley CA.

Sept. 20: The 31st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
The 31st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, the state’s largest volunteer event, will take place on Saturday, September 20th 2014. The event is expected to draw more than 70,000 volunteers who will combat marine debris at over 800 locations throughout the state by removing the trash that has accumulated on California’s beaches and inland shorelines over the past year. Get out there, join the effort in Antioch, CA.  There are three locations to choose from: Antioch Marina, Prewett Park & Fulton Shipyard. FOMCW Delta Clean Up

The Friends of Marsh Creek Watershed (FOMCW) are proud to announce that Marsh Creek & Delta Cleanup Day which will take place on Saturday, September 20. The event will be held between 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Participants may choose from locations in Brentwood, Discovery Bay or Oakley. Last year’s event had 400 volunteers during Coast Cleanup Day where they picked up 6.75 tons of trash and cleaned 20-miles of creek and delta waterways.

Delta Harvest Run

Sept. 21:  Delta Harvest Run
Please join us for this community event as we work to raise money for local East Contra Costa food banks and pantries. This benefit is organized by the Delta Association of Realtors Community Service Foundation. We have designed a route that is flat and fast and will appeal to athletes of all levels. Our route is USTF Course Certified.

All events to start on the 50 yard line/ home side of the Liberty High School Football Stadium just off Oak Street in Brentwood. Full address is: Liberty High School 850 2nd Street Brentwood, CA

Races Include:

  • 10 Mile – 7:00 AM
  • 10K – 7:20 AM
  • 5k – 7:40 AM
  • Family Fun Run – 9:00 AM

There will be cash awards for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd overall Female and Male winners in the 10 Mile, 10k and 5k events.  The awards ceremony will begin at approximately 9:00 AM at the Entertainment Stage near the Liberty High School Football Stadium track.
