East Contra Costa Cities Respond to COVID-19 With Local Emergency Declaration

by ECT

On Monday, cities across East Contra Costa County including Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg all declared a local emergency. The move will allow each city to access financial support in the event there are financial losses within the City.

The move comes after Contra Costa County and other local San Francisco Bay Area counties issued a shelter-in-place directive through April 6 — full order can be viewed here.

This order will allow for travel for medical purposes and other services like grocery shopping and pick-up from restaurants–as well as essential services. The order will impact more than 6.5 million Bay Area residents.

On Sunday, Governor Gavin Newsom called for home isolation for seniors and the shutdown of bars, nigthclubs, brew pubs and wineries to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). He also recommended that those who are medically vulnerable to home isolate.

(Note – many cities across the San Francisco Bay Area did the same).

Here are actions announced Monday:

City of Antioch: the city said in its statement that to date, the City has already taken aggressive steps in the fight against COVID-19. From closing city offices, increasing daily cleaning, canceling community events, and canceling or minimizing the number of constituents that can attend public meetings, Antioch has been proactive in their efforts to minimize employee and public contact.

City of Brentwood: City Manager Tim Ogden declared a local emergency proclamation. In doing so, City Hall and most City Offices will be shut down until April 7, 2020. This closure includes the Senior Center, Community Center, and Municipal Services Center to the public. Parks remain open. During this time, all essential services, and sufficient personnel remain in place and the safety of our public remains a top priority.

City of Oakley: announced all City facilities, including City Hall, the Recreation Center, parks, playgrounds and associated facilities will be CLOSED to the public through April 8, 2020. Essential services, such as Police services, will remain functioning. All City of Oakley meetings (including the March 24th City Council meeting), events, rentals, classes and programs are cancelled through the morning of April 8, 2020.

City of Pittsburg: All City of Pittsburg meetings, events, and programs are cancelled or postponed through the April 7, 2020. Other closures in the City of Pittsburg include public schools, the Pittsburg Library, STS Academy, all park rental facilities and areas, and all public restrooms. Essential services will continue, including law enforcement, public works and the water treatment plant.

Other Tidbits:

Bay Area Rapid Transit: BART will continue to provide regular service for riders performing essential activities and for riders traveling to and from “essential business” work, with long enough trains to allow for social distancing. Based on ridership levels last week and over the weekend, social distancing is happening on BART.  More info

California DMV: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) asked California law enforcement to exercise discretion for 60 days in their enforcement of driver license and vehicle registration expiration dates beginning March 16, 2020. More info

Contra Costa County Courts:  CLOSED approximately for 2 weeks beginning Monday March 16th. They hope to reopen Wednesday April 1st. More info

Schools: Very fluid… most have announced the earliest they will open is April 8 but it could be pushed back further. Check with your local school district.

Supervisor Diane Burgis: With health authorities advising us to shelter-in-place to limit the spread of coronavirus, she has closed her District 3 office to all visitors and appointments starting Today -Tuesday, March 17, 2020. You can always send her an email at [email protected] and we will forward it to the appropriate staff member. She anticipates her office will be closed until the shelter-in-place is lifted.
