Discovery Bay: Three Patients Airlifted to Local Hospitals With Critical Injuries After Traffic Collision

At 3:00 pm Tuesday, all lanes on Highway 4 near the Old River Bridge were shut down after a multi-vehicle accident occurred in Discovery Bay.

The incident originally had a total of three-vehicles with five-patients per Engine 59 who was first on scene. They immediately requested additional units which included another fire engine, three ambulances and two medical helicopters at roughly 3:12 pm.

Upon arrival of the Battalion Chief 5, the number of patients was downgraded to four with three patients suffering from critical injuries and one patient who had moderate injuries. BC5 requested the helicopters be landed on the highway at the scene as traffic was at a standstill in both directions.

A third medical helicopter was requested at 3:56 pm which per radio traffic was transporting a patient to Children’s Hospital in Oakland. With resources limited, a CHP helicopter was closest by about 15-minutes and they made the transport of the patient.

According to the District, the cause of the accident is unknown and is under investigation by CHP.  The roadway was re-opened at 4:38pm.
