At 9:51 pm Monday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District crews responded to a garage fire on Bixler Road in Discovery Bay.

Upon arrival, crews found a detached garage fully involved in flames and immediately moved to protect the home from catching fire. The single alarm fire required 21-firefighters which used up all District resources along with Engine 88 (CONFIRE) out of Antioch.

According to ECCFPD Chief Hugh Henderson, crews were battling a power line that went down and no hydrants in the area where they were forced to shuttle in water from a half-mile away.

“The priority was to keep the fire out of the home and keep everyone safe with the power line down,” said Henderson.

The fire damage is estimated to be $100,000 while the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

21 Firefighters to put out a single garage fire? Gee, look how busy they are! Hopefully we pass more taxes; ah, er “benefit assessments” so maybe next time we can dispatch 50 firefighters and another 6 rigs to deal with such a calamity.
