Democratic Leaders Denounce Homophobic Assault Perpetrated Against LGBTQ Young Democrats at State Party Convention

San Francisco, CA – After the California Democratic Party Convention Saturday night, one party delegate and one California Young Democrats member were victims of a homophobic assault and battery.

As they left Southside Spirit House in SoMa – just a few blocks away from Moscone Center – the two were called a homophobic slur by a man nearby. The suspect became aggressive, slapped one of the victims, and proceeded to beat the other victim until he bled. One victim was admitted and then released from Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital early Sunday morning.

“We strongly condemn the actions of this individual. We call on the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco District Attorney to fully investigate and prosecute the violence for what it is: a homophobic assault and battery.

Homophobia has no place in our communities, not in San Francisco, not anywhere. We stand with these two victims and we look forward to an appropriate response from local authorities that sends a strong signal to the public that this behavior is unacceptable and illegal, for the safety of our entire community,” said Tiffany Woods, Co-Chair of the California Democratic Party LGBT Caucus.

According to a social media post by the Contra Costa Young Democrats, they issued the following statement:

One member of the Contra Costa Young Democrats and another from the Solano County Young Democrats were victims of a homophobic assault and battery at the 2019 California Democratic Party State Convention. Nearly a dozen of our members and friends were nearby and traumatized by the event.
