SACRAMENTO – By an overwhelming majority, the Assembly and Senate approved two public safety bills by Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla (D-Concord):  AB 908 gives DMV tools to prevent identity theft, counterfeiting, and consumer fraud; and AB 884 grants county sheriffs more flexibility in determining parole for inmates.

“Identity theft has become rampant in our digital age and providing useful resources to law enforcement investigators can help prevent fraud and apprehend suspects,” said Assemblywoman Bonilla. “It is critical that the DMV utilize every tool available in its efforts to investigate these crimes. AB 908 will not only ensure the orderly and legal access to information, but will also help better protect the public.”

“We believe AB 908 is critical to help DMV investigators,” said Jason M. Burruel, Legislative Director of the California Peace Officers Association, sponsor of the bill. “Accurate identification of persons with a government issued identification card is good for all including law enforcement.”

The Senate passed Assemblywoman Bonilla’s AB 884, which would give county sheriffs more tools and flexibility to monitor and manage parolees. This legislation would allow county parole boards to release an inmate on parole for a term not to exceed three years.

“In counties where there is severe overcrowding, AB 884 will relieve overcrowding in jails while providing the opportunity for supervision under county parole,” said Bonilla.

“Assembly Bill 884 is an important measure that will allow counties additional flexibility to supervise county jail inmates,” stated Gregory J. Ahern, President of the California State Sheriffs’ Association, sponsor of the bill.

AB 884 is also supported by the Sheriffs of Contra Costa County and Solano County, which are located in Bonilla’s Assembly District.

Assemblywoman Susan A. Bonilla was first elected to the Assembly in November 2010, and represents California’s 14th Assembly District, which is comprised of the north and central portions of Contra Costa County and southern portion of Solano County.
