On Saturday Contra Costa County is reporting it has 168 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19). The county also said it has two deaths.

The health department continues to maintain its stance that it is not going to be releasing the cities of those infected or hospitalized. Supervisor Diane Burgis explained the reasoning behind this in a Podcast (45-min mark) we had on Friday.

The health department does not release any further details, including the cities of those infected, or the number of people currently hospitalized

CALIFORNIA DEPT. OF HEALTH: COVID-19 By the Numbers

In order to better focus public health resources on the changing needs of California communities, beginning on March 18, the state is no longer collecting information about California travelers returning from countries that have confirmed COVID-19 outbreaks. Community transmission of COVID-19 has been identified in California since late February, and since early March, most of the confirmed cases in the state were not related to travel outside of the United States.

Twenty-two public health labs in California are testing samples for COVID-19. These labs include the California Department of Public Health’s Laboratory in Richmond, Alameda, Contra Costa, Humboldt, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Monterey, Napa-Solano-Yolo-Marin (located in Solano), Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Shasta, Sonoma, Tulare and Ventura County public health laboratories The Richmond Laboratory will provide diagnostic testing within a 48-hour turnaround time. This means California public health officials will get test results sooner, so that patients will get the best care.

It would be helpful if Contra Costa County would tell us what city the patients were from. They are not doing anyone any help.

I agree. We should all be made aware of the cities. That doesn’t give away any privacy. Why does she get to know where the virus is more prevelant than us.

Why is this report not being listed by city? It would make people less anxious if they had these facts.

People in certain communities are more susceptible to getting this virus than others We simply have to know which cities’ residents are being infected. This way, we can avoid that city. That’s the first rule of epidemiology What’s the matter with these board of supervisors people? They should not call the shots.

Absolutely agree. They are doing a disservice by NOT telling people the cities. HIPAA isnt being violated here because we dont have personal information. We have a right to know.

Constra Costa County people are NOT doing anyone a favor by NOT releasing the names of the cities where people are being infected I suspect CONCORD is one of them. Not my city, but the demographics there show that it might be one of those with the problems. I don’t care what Diane Burgis reasoning is. That’s total BS! She is putting our lives in danger!

Well Molly, if the comments are coming from Burgis, you might think it is East County. I agree she should be more transparent. Keep in mind she just got re-elected. I wouldn’t expect too much from her for 3 more years. That’s just the way some of these politicians are.
