City of Brentwood Hit With Third Suicide of 2015

by ECT

Wednesday morning, Brentwood Police and emergency personal responded to a report of a suicide just after 7:00 am at a home in the area off Fairview and Grant.

Little information was shared, however, it was stated the subject involved is under the age of 18 and was found by a parent.  Both East Contra Costa Fire and AMR also responded.

Brentwood police stated this was the third suicide of 2015 with one occurring in May and two in August. In 2014, Brentwood had a total of 2 suicides while in 2013 they had a total of 5.

Walk to DarknessThe incident comes as the City of Oakley will host its first annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk to help raise awareness of suicide prevention on October 10. The walk is open to all participants in any community. Click here to register.

The walk will take place at Cypress Grove Community Park, located at 4001 Frank Hengel Way. Registration will begin at 9:00am and the walk will start at 10:00am.

Oakley is hosting the event because of its number of suicides. As of July 31, Oakley has had 5 suicides while in 2014, the City has had 11.

In 2011, according to Contra Costa County data, 116 people committed suicide in the County. The same data shows more than 39,000 people committed suicide in 2011.

Suicide Prevention

There’s a myth that people who talk about suicide won’t really do it. This is wrong. Before attempting suicide, many people make direct statements about their intention to end their lives or less direct comments about how they might as well be dead or that their friends and family will be better off without them. Any reference to suicide should be taken seriously.
