CHP: Wrong Way Driver on I-80 Results in Fatality

Early Friday morning, at about 12:31am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a wrong way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near the Carquinez Bridge. The wrong way vehicle (2015 silver Toyota Camry) continued westbound in the eastbound lanes and then collided head on into a vehicle (silver 2007 Ford Focus) traveling in the eastbound lanes of I-80, just west of Pinole Valley Road.

Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, the solo female driver of the wrong way Toyota vehicle (78yr old female from Concord) had suffered major injuries and the driver of the Ford (46yr old male from Vallejo) had also suffered major injuries but was trapped in the driver seat due to the collision damage. And his passenger (39yr old female also from Vallejo) only suffered minor injuries. Once the driver of the Ford was extricated by the Fire Department, he and the wrong way driver were both transported by ambulance to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.

The 78yr old female driver was treated for non life threatening moderate injuries. But tragically the 46yr old driver was pronounced deceased while at the hospital. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of identity of the deceased male driver from Vallejo.

**UPDATE – the 78yr old female driver of the wrong way Toyota was a reported missing person out of Concord. Concord Police department & the family were notified. Investigation still pending.**
