According to the CHP, a pedestrian was struck and killed Monday night in the lanes of southbound I-680 within a construction zone, just north of N Main Street in Walnut Creek.
The incident occurred at 10:46 pm where a 42-year-old female pedestrian out of Lafayette had been struck by a vehicle within the lanes of traffic and pronounced deceased at the scene. Her identity was not released.
In the area where this incident occurred was an active construction zone with the far left lane (#1 lane) closed off by orange cones and also the far right lane (#7 lane) closed off by orange cones. CHP was notified by a worker within the construction zone that a pedestrian was walking on the freeway. Upon CHP responding to the area, the pedestrian had walked out into the lanes of traffic (#4 lane) on southbound I-680 and was struck by a Chrysler Sebring and sustained fatal injuries.
The driver of the Sebring was not injured, cooperative and remained on scene for the investigation.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision regarding the pedestrian but it is still under investigation.
