On Saturday, August 22 at about 3:00am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a vehicle versus a pedestrian collision on HWY-24 eastbound, just east of Fish Ranch Road.

Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, a Nissan Leaf had collided with a male pedestrian, who was within the roadway in the #4 lane. Tragically the male pedestrian (29yr old man from Concord) was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The female driver of the Nissan was not injured but was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for suspected Felony DUI.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of identity for the deceased male.

In the initial investigation, the male pedestrian was stopped along the right shoulder to assist his wife with her disabled vehicle. As the male and his wife were standing outside of her vehicle on the right shoulder, at some point the male entered the #4 lane of HWY-24 to retrieve a piece of property.

At that same moment, the Nissan Leaf was approaching the location of the male that was directly in the path of the Nissan Leaf in the #4 lane. The driver of the Nissan was unable to avoid the male in the roadway and collided into him, causing fatal injuries. The driver of the Nissan remained at the scene and was suspected of driving under the influence.

After the completion of a DUI investigation, she was arrested for Felony DUI.

Alcohol is a contributing factor with the driver of the Nissan in this collision. Alcohol or Drugs as a contributing factor regarding the male pedestrian is unknown at this time. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.

That area is dangerous enough without idiots driving under the influence. I hope the young woman involved suffers a lifetime of nightmares. My sympathies to the vicitim’s wife and family
