CHP: Christmas Day Maximum Enforcement Period Begins

by ECT

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Highway Patrol’s wish this holiday season is for everyone to stay safe during their travels. The CHP reminds drivers to follow the posted speed limit, buckle up, avoid distractions while driving, and always plan to have a sober driver behind the wheel.

We will be out in force during the Christmas Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP), starting at 6:01 PM on Thursday, December 24, and ending at 11:59 PM on Sunday, December 27. The focus of this holiday MEP is speed limit enforcement; however, CHP officers and drug recognition experts will be watching for all signs of impaired driving as well as assisting motorists wherever needed.

“The Christmas holiday is a time for family and friends to get together, and we want to make sure everyone arrives safely at their destinations,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “Drivers are reminded to make wise decisions ahead of time for their own safety and the safety of others sharing the roadways with them.”

Assemblyman Jim Frazier shared the Commissioner’s sentiment with the community of Contra Costa County saying:

Jim Frazier AD11Serving as Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, I’m proud to work alongside the California Highway Patrol as we’ve focused on improving the safety of our local roadways. Having lost my child in a traffic fatality, the recent tragedies and severe accidents in our region this fall have hit close to home. We shouldn’t have to worry our loved ones will be harmed by those who use excessive speed, drive distractedly or pass illegally on area streets and highways. Through the CHP’s current and on-going work, I hope the message from me and the CHP is clear: There’s zero tolerance for reckless driving in East Contra Costa. Let’s focus on saving lives not minutes. During the upcoming holiday, I hope you and your families enjoy every blessing of the season and wish everyone safe travels.”
