CHP: All Lanes Re-open on Highway 24 After Crane Strikes Power Pole

The California Highway Patrol issued a SIGALERT just before 6:00 am Monday after a crane struck a power pole which shut down all westbound lanes of Highway 24. It also knocked out power to more than 100 PG&E customers.

By 6:29 am, the SIGALERT was cancelled and all lanes were open.

According to BART:

There is currently a downed PG&E power line near the BART Lafayette track rebuilding work site. At this time, it is our understanding that shortly before 5:30 a.m. the large crane being used to carry out the track work hit the power line causing it to fall and block all westbound lanes of Highway 24. The freeway lanes have since been re-opened.

There are no injuries.

BART was already planning to run a Sunday schedule with service beginning at 8 a.m. When service begins, the planned bus bridge will be in place.

PG&E, Caltrans, CHP, and the Fire Department were notified.

This incident will not impact BART’s ability to re-open the track and provide regular BART service as planned on Tuesday morning.
