The California Highway Patrol reported Monday that statewide, at least 34-people have been killed in collisions over the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.

CHP says in half of those crashes, those who died were not wearing a seat belt and the number of fatalities is down 8 percent from last year.

CHP also reported they made 1,099 DUI arrests over the weekend, an average of 14 DUI Arrests per hour as well as a 4 percent increase from last year.

“Click It or Ticket” debuted in California in 2005, and since then the state’s seat belt use rate has increased from 92.5 percent in 2005 to a record high of 97.4 percent in 2014, representing over 1.5 million more vehicle occupants who have started buckling up.

The minimum ticket cost of an adult seat belt violation in California is $162 and up, and a minimum of $465 for not properly restraining a child under 16. If the parent is not in the car, the driver gets the ticket.

Motorists are also reminded to protect child passengers by placing them in age-appropriate restraint devices, whether a safety seat or booster seat.  The law requires that children under age eight ride in the back seat and that children under age two are secured in a rear-facing child passenger safety seat.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2017 there were more than 10,000 unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide.
