CHP: 1,140 Arrests, 50 Deaths During New Years Maximum Enforcement Period

The California Highway Patrol announced that officers made more than 1,140 arrests for driving under the influence during the 102-holiday enforcement effort over New Years.

CHP also stated least 50 people were killed in collisions in California throughout the New Year’s Maximum Enforcement Period. They said nearly half (47%) of all the vehicle occupants who died within CHP jurisdiction were not wearing a seat belt.

CHP previously reported in the Golden Gate Division, the Christmas Maximum Enforcement Period (December 21 through December 25), officers assigned to Areas within CHP – Golden Gate Division arrested 157 motorists for driving under the influence (DUI), which is up from 144 DUI arrests last year. Unfortunately, CHP also saw an uptick in fatal traffic collisions this Christmas Season in the San Francisco Bay Area, where three people lost their lives in CHP – Golden Gate Division jurisdiction.
