CALTRANS: Caldecott Tunnel Bore to Close Twice This Week Due to Maintenance

Oakland/Orinda – CALTRANS will conduct a two-day tunnel closure on the eastbound State Route 24’s (SR-24) Bore #1 of the Caldecott Tunnel to perform tunnel lightening maintenance in the cities of Oakland and Orinda.

The nightly closure will begin Tuesday, January 28 from 10:00 pm to 4:30 am until Thursday, January 30, weather permitting. If it rains, closures will be rescheduled for a later date.

Closure information:

  • Jan 28 – 10:00 pm until 4:30 am Jan 29:
  • Jan 29 – 10:00 pm until 4:30 am Jan 30

Traffic Control Measures:

Changeable message signs and directional signs will be in place to assist motorist traveling in the area. Please follow posted detour information. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra time for their commute. CALTRANS urges the public to drive with caution through the construction zone and slow for the cone zone.

It’s about time! I see the hundreds of lights out in the tunnels daily. And I wonder who is responsible for the maintenance? They tunnels are so dark and cause accidents. Better put this on a PM plan Caltrans! (And not once a year)
