Sacramento, CA – Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Oakley) was named by the California State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America as their 2013 Legislator of the Year for his support of veterans and the military.

“I am deeply honored to be selected by the California State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America as their Legislator of the Year,” said Assemblymember Frazier. “Veterans are profound heroes who left their homes and families to answer the call of duty. Although their service is a debt that can never be repaid, I will continue my efforts to give back and improve the lives of all of our veterans who have served our country so unselfishly.”

Upon being elected to the State Assembly, Assemblymember Frazier introduced his first bill, AB 287, which allows Vietnam veterans who were not included on the original memorial, but who have died as a direct result of injuries or illness suffered during the conflict, to be added to the California Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The bill also allows the addition of veteran names that were inadvertently left off the list, and allows veterans service organizations and individuals to submit names for consideration of inclusion on the memorial, including those who have died as a result of exposure to the herbicide Agent Orange. Governor Brown signed this bill into law on September 6, 2013.

Assemblymember Frazier also introduced AB 513, a bill that required the Department of Motor Vehicles to offer a driver’s license printed with the word “VETERAN” to ensure that our veterans can quickly and easily identify themselves and access the services and benefits they are entitled to without having to carry around a DD-214.  Unfortunately, this bill was held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee, but Assemblymember Frazier plans on reintroducing the bill within the next few weeks.

This month, Assemblymember Frazier is privileged to host The Wall That Heals exhibit, a traveling half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. and accompanying mobile museum, to the California State Capitol.  The Wall That Heals will be available for public viewing 24-hours a day, from Thursday, February 27, 2014 to Sunday, March 2, 2014.
