Update per CHP: BIG RIG FATALITY CRASH on BYRON HWY

This morning, at about 6:25am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a two vehicle collision on Byron Hwy southbound, at Holey Road. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, it was determined that a 2017 Freightliner Big Rig, traveling southbound on Byron Hwy, had crossed over the solid double yellow lines and into the northbound lane and collided with a Ford F-150 truck (in a side swipe manner) that was traveling northbound. The solo adult male driver of the Ford truck was not injured.
After colliding with the Ford, the adult male driver of the Big Rig (unknown identity at this time) veered back across the southbound lane of Byron Hwy and lost control into the dirt field located west of Byron Hwy and overturned. Tragically the cab of the Big Rig was crushed with the male driver inside causing fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency personnel. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of identity of the Big Rig driver once it is known.
It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it and have not already spoken with CHP, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
