Brentwood: Female in Critical Condition Airlifted to Hospital, Two Others Also Injured

At 7:03 am Wednesday, East Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters responded to Balfour Road and the Bypass for a report of a vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, Engine 52 located a two vehicle crash with 1 vehicle on its side. In total, there were three patients with two minor injuries and one patient in critical condition.

Fire units on scene requested a third ambulance and a medical helicopter and by 7:18 extrication of an adult female was in progress.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District also responded to assist with the medical helicopter. AMR provided patient transport.

One patient was flown by medical helicopter to John Muir Trauma Center in Walnut Creek while the accident is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

The roadway was closed for several hours.

3:40 pm Update

According to the Brentwood Police Department, their preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Ford Explorer was traveling eastbound on Balfour Road. Witnesses stated that the Explorer failed to stop for the red light on Balfour Road. The Explorer collided with a Nissan Altima in the intersection of Balfour Road and the Highway 4 Bypass.

The drivers of the Altima and the Explorer sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to John Muir Trauma Center. The passenger of the Nissan sustained life threatening injuries and was flown to John Muir Trauma Center.

At the time of the collision, neither driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. The roadway has since been reopened.

Names of the involved parties are being withheld at this time pending further investigation.
