Assemblymember Grayson Introduces Resolution to Increase Awareness of Down Syndrome

by ECT

(SACRAMENTO) Assemblymember Timothy S. Grayson (D-Concord) presented a resolution today on the Assembly Floor to raise awareness of Down syndrome – a chromosomal condition that occurs in 1 out of every 700 babies born in the U.S., and affects all races and ethnicities.

Joining Assemblymember Grayson during the presentation at the Capitol was his sister Shari Grayson who has Down syndrome.

“Today, I am very proud to introduce my sister Shari and share her story with my Assembly colleagues,” said Assemblymember Grayson. “She is a remarkable human being who doesn’t let this condition define her or limit her dreams and ambitions. Like most individuals with Down syndrome, she attends school, works, and contributes to society in many wonderful ways.”

Assemblymember Grayson’s resolution, known as ACR 165, proclaims March 18 to March 24, 2018, as “California Down Syndrome Awareness Week,” and March 21, 2018, as “California Down Syndrome Day.”

According to the National Down Syndrome Society, Down syndrome is considered to be the most common chromosomal condition in the U.S. Individuals with Down syndrome benefit from adequate access to health care, early intervention programs, and inclusive education, as well as appropriate research – all vital to their growth and development.

In 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 21 as “World Down Syndrome Day” to be observed every year beginning in 2012, and invited all nations to observe “World Down Syndrome Day” in order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome. The 21st day of the third month (March) was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.

Tim Grayson represents the 14th Assembly District that includes the communities of Benicia, Concord, Clayton, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Vallejo, Pittsburg and Walnut Creek. For more information please visit the Assemblymember’s website, www.assembly.ca.gov/a14.
