Antioch Mayor Calls Contra Costa DA Policy on Drug Possession “Disturbing” and “Unbelievable”

by ECT

This week, Antioch Mayor Sean Wright continued to question the Contra Costa County District Attorney Diana Becton and the decisions she is making. This time on opting not to charge individuals with drug possession.

In an email to supporters, Wright called her action “disturbing” after her announcement said individuals caught possessing smaller quantities of heroin, cocaine or methamphetamines will not be charged with a crime. He called it “unbelievable” and continued saying an individual can be caught three times in the span of a year and still not get charged for drug possession.

In Becton’s release, she said the policy allows the DA’s Office to focus our efforts on cases that may pose significant public safety concerns such as criminal street gangs, drug dealers, violent criminals, and cases involving firearms.

“When I took Office, I realized we had to change our perspective on filing cases, especially low-level drug cases. From my experience as a judge I saw first-hand how individuals were cycling through our system. Now as the District Attorney, I worked with several law enforcement partners throughout the county to build a plan and gain consensus on how best to proceed with these types of cases. We cannot prosecute ourselves out of this growing trend of low-level offenses being submitted to our Office for a filing decision,” said DA Becton.

Prosecutors will use their discretion on these low-level non-violent offenses to determine if criminal charges are appropriate. Pre-filing diversion is also available for individuals in lieu of a formal criminal complaint.

Last week, he issued a statement against the District Attorney on her announcement requiring prosecutors to consider “need” before deciding whether to charge an individual with looting.

Wright issued the statement highlighting that his opponent, Lamar Thorpe, is a “huge supporter of the District Attorney’s policies and supported her for re-election”. Wright “

“If elected, I worry that he will embrace policies that favor criminals, which would do more damage than not to our community,” said Wright.

Wright is supported by the Antioch Police Officers Association. He was elected in 2016 and is seeking a second term.

Enough is enough. It is time to recall this SOROS installed sleeper agent. We need to head her off at the pass. Imagine, this MARXIST thing of a county D.A., in collusion with a cadre of BLM/ANTIFA (its not just an ideology MAN) candidates positioning for MAYOR, CITY COUNCIL, SCHOOL BOARD, and CLERK, organizing to agitate for illegal and destructive Riots and dumpster fires like Seatle and Portland. With this highly charged and potential disruption of the Presidential vote results. We can not afford to be bystanders lest we lose our country!

THE PRICE OF LIBERTY IS ETERNAL VIGILANCE!

Yup, charge all those opioid users and put them in jail. Go to Butte county where they have 10 times the scripts,as people. Go to Modesto and pick up those doper zombies walking the street. Go to Antioch city park and arrest those folks. Head to the Appalachia’s and jail those people…oh,oh it’s a “medical issue” now.

Totally ignores the impact hard drugs such as heroin snd meth have beyond the user. Crime to pay for more, neglected and abused kids, etc. Im all for offering treatment the first time but if people no want to change they cannot be out and about acting like they can do whatever they want. Does anyone really expect anything else from this idiotic woman? She needs to be replaced one-way-or-another. If she doesn’t do her job, then people who are victimized by these “first time offenders” need to take the matter in their own hands and deal with the offenders themselves and it won’t be pretty.

Like Antioch doesn’t have enough problems already, fighting crime isn’t easy for our law enforcement and to take away their ability to do their jobs because one person thinks it will allow them to focus on other crimes is just stupidity. I say you start by allowing them to do the job that they signed up for and back them up in the courts. Tougher penalties to stop the cycle. Make our streets safe again and stop catering to the criminals.

Remember that it was Diane Burgis, Federal Glover and John Gioia who voted to appoint Becton as Interim District Attorney.

I agree with the DA. Sending someone to jail over possessing small amounts of drugs is a waste of time for the courts. Let the time be used going after dealers, people with larger quantities that want to do harm in the community while protecting their product.

Mayor Wright is as corrupt as you can get. Everything he does is to get re-elected. His constant lies make me sick.

LoveableCurmudgeon Oct 2, 2020 - 5:10 am

Only an ignorant person would call Sean Wright ” corrupt”. That is just ludicrous and shows that the accuser has no idea of what corruption really is. It isn’t enough to merely oppose a candidate these days. Seems you have a cast ignorant insults. How about growing up?

Rob Oct 3, 2020 - 12:30 pm

Just to be extremely clear, if Sean is corrupt, then Lamar is ALSO corrupt as well, since he ALSO only cares about re-election. By definition, one CAN’T be corrupt if the other IS corrupt for the SAME REASON “you stated” (re-election reasons)! Yea, I know…COMMON SENCE!

Assault the man not the message. Typical leftist tactic. Are to provide any proof of your statement. I think not. Anyway Giuliani cleaned up NY City by enforcing even littering crimes. You do not lower crime by removing what is considered a crime. Like SF City did with public defecation. Yes the war on drugs is bs but drug addiction needs to be addressed and these addicts commit crimes to get money to satisfy their addictions. Lets get a solution. Im not sure whats that solution looks like but not enforcing drug possession laws is not it.

Non violent offenders dont deserve to be locked up

Reason #542 that I am having a house built outside of California.

After 50 years of life in the state, and 20 in Brentwood it is clear that things will not improve and instead will spiral deeper into the pooper. These people and their soft on crime ideas are insane. Anyone supporting them deserves exactly what they are going to get.

Another George Soros funded D.A. More of these Marxist tactics to ment to destabilize our country. Wake up.
