AAA: Californians Paying More than a $1 More per Gas that Rest of US

by ECT

On Monday, AAA reported that the average national price of gas is at $2.51 which is 3-cents cheaper than last week. In California, the average cost is a dollar more at $3.52.

AAA said gas prices have continued to drop over the last week as gasoline stocks grew again, measuring at 260 million bbl – the highest stock level ever recorded by the Energy Information Administration (EIA) since it began recording the data in 1990.

“Increased total domestic stocks of gasoline have helped to ease pump prices,” said Jeanette Casselano, AAA spokesperson. “Typically, we see lower demand during this time of year. When combined with higher stock levels, pump prices usually decrease in response.”

EIA estimates that demand grew slightly from 8.56 million b/d to 8.66 million b/d. However, the current rate is lower than last year’s 8.87 million b/d at this time.

On the West Coast, according to EIA’s report for the week ending on January 17, total gas stocks in the region dropped 1.4 million bbl to 32.4 million bbl. The current supply level is in line with last year’s level at this time, which will likely help prices to stabilize throughout the week.

Locally in Contra Costa County, gas prices in Antioch are as low as $3.05 at Costco, but ranch between $3.19 to $3.39.  Brentwood ranches from $3.17 to $3.49. Meanwhile, Concord has price ranges from is $3.15 to $3.49.

Around the San Francisco Bay Area, gas prices in San Francisco are about $3.50, Oakland is around $3.40 while San Jose has a low at $2.93 at Costco with prices around $3.05 per gallon.

Oil Market Dynamics

At the close of Friday’s formal trading session on the NYMEX, WTI dropped by $1.40 to settle at $54.19. Crude prices dropped last week after market concerns increased due to the growing impact of the coronavirus on global travel. If global travel demand decreases, global crude demand would likely follow suit and result in lower global crude consumption. If market concerns regarding the virus continue to grow this week, crude prices could drop further.

Motorists can find current gas prices along their route with the free AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android. The app can also be used to map a route, find discounts, book a hotel and access AAA roadside assistance.

For Vasco & Byron Hwy commuters, you are paying $1 to $2 dollars more every run To Tracy or Livermore than the rest of the country yet our roads are substandard and deteriorating fast. Doesn’t it make you wonder where all that money goes ? Also many people do not realize we are also paying a sales tax specifically for transportation in Contra Costa. Moreover, did you know they want to add another sales tax on top of the other taxes this next election for transportation? County roads are real bad. The county receives Federal money, State money, sales tax money, special gas tax money, and grant money, Again, where does all this money go ? Certainly it is not being spent well. You decide on the next ballot to increase sales tax again for transportation. It looks to me like a pork barrel money pit of waste.

Jg, 100% agreed. The roads I am driving are getting worse, not better, since increased gas taxes.

Of course this state is fucking us. Just ask jimmy Frazier. He’s driving a state funded, by us the tax payers, to drive on our wonderful roads. Of course our voters passed his BS bill so now we live with it. No doubt the voters that voted for his gas tax expected another California give away program. Frazier’s has tax was another bullshit lie from jimmy Frazier. Fuck him and the horse he road in on.
