Brentwood Police Chief Authorizes Officers to Carry Patrol Rifles at Public Events

by ECT

The Brentwood Police Department announced Tuesday that they are stepping up security measures when staffing certain public events in the city of Brentwood by carrying patrol rifles at public events.

This came as a result of the departments reevaluation of public event security and the move was authorized by police chief Thomas Hansen.

According to the department, this is an effort to enhance public safety and preserve the quality of life within the City. They also cited safety being the top prioity and with recent mass shootings at public events in Gilroy, Dayton, and El Paso have caused the Department to revisit how it deploys resources at public events.

As another safety measure, the Department may deploy mobile vehicle barriers, which are used to cordon off areas where large crowds are assembled. These metal barriers are easily deployed and were authorized for purchase by the Brentwood City Council as part of their 2018/20 Strategic Initiatives.

The Police Department remains committed to providing the safest environment possible for residents and visitors to enjoy the many public events in the City of Brentwood.

“I understand that seeing vehicle barriers or my officer’s carrying rifles may be uncomfortable, or even unnerving. While we may not be able to predict or stop someone from attempting to cause harm to visitors and members of our community at a public event, I am committed to providing my officers with the tools they need to better respond if that should occur,” explained Chief Hansen.

Brentwood Mayor Bob Taylor said this was all about the safety of the community and supports the proactive measures.

“We have been working on this for quite a while and Brentwood has been continuously having more and more people showing up at our events, they are very popular such as concerts at the park and the farmers markets have expanded to great success,” said Taylor. “This is just a safety issue that needs to be addressed. I am for this, its not an emphasis on the rifles, they won’t be in public view, we will have our uniform officers going through crowds, but this is behind the scenes preventative safety and I fully support it. Even the barricades, these are good things to have as a preventative measure for public safety.”

The department remind everyone to remain vigilant, and if you see something unusual or suspicious to report it immediately by calling 911.

The Brentwood Police Department will be implementing these measures in the near future.

This is good practice.
History shows, nut jobs choose gun free zones to do their lunacy mass shootings.
I hope they put at least one armed protector, armed with a rifle, at each school as well.

Good job Chief Hansen, and Mayor Taylor.
