East Contra Costa Fire Closes Station 94, Now a 3-Fire Station Service Model

by ECT

On July 1, 2017 at 8:00 am, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District closed Station 94 in Knightsen leaving the District with three open fire stations.

Station 94 has closed 3-times since 2012 but was re-opened after a SAFER Grant provided funding for a 24-month period and an agreement by the county and the cities of Brentwood and Oakley allowed for a temporary 1-year opening.

The closure of the station is due to lack of funding and the District will move forward with 31 of the 36 fire suppression personnel operating out of three fire stations.

In May, the average response time was 8:34 minutes with Bethel Island resident receiving service within an average time of 13:32 minutes while Brentwood’s average was around 7-minutes.

The locations of the open stations include:

  • Station 52 – 201 John Muir Park Way, Brentwood CA 94513
  • Station 53 – 530 O’Hara Ave, Oakley CA 94561
  • Station 59 – 1685 Bixler Road, Discovery Bay CA 94505

Our interview with fire chief Brian Helmick on the impact of the closure and potential agreement with Contra Costa Fire on aid.

Questions:

  1. What today means for the East Contra Costa Fire and fire responses?
  2. Will the District perform inside fire attack?
  3. Impact on Bethel Island, Knightsen, Brentwood, Oakley, Byron?
  4. Impact on firefighters on duty working within a 3-station model?
  5. What is an aid agreement with Contra Costa Fire going to look like?
  6. What can citizens do to help the fire district while protecting themselves?
