East Contra Costa Firefighters Limit Byron Vegetation Fire to 5-Acres

by ECT

On June 14 at 4:40 pm, East Contra Costa firefighters responded to a report of a grass fire in the 5500 block of Byron Hot Springs Road in Byron.

Upon arrival, Battalion Chief 5 found two acres of grass on fire with a flat slop, rapid spread due to high winds. All three ECCFPD units were requested along with CALFIRE to ensure the fire did not jump Highway 4.

In total, the fire burned 5-acres and caused Byron Highway to be shut down as crews worked the scene which caused a large amount of smoke to cross over the highway.

The probable cause was listed as a fire ember from an earlier incident in the day at the recycling center after a large green waste pile was on fire that broke out just before noon.

According to Chief Hugh Henderson, all District resources were tied up for more than 2-hours.
