The California Highway Patrol ordered a SIG Alert and called for the shutdown of the Wilder exit Wednesday after a car lost control and overturned several times – killing the driver.
Investigators said the man, 23-year-old Antioch resident David Sotelo, was driving a gold 2002 Buick on the shoulder of eastbound Highway 24 at 2:49 p.m. when he began to swerve and change lanes. CHP officers said the driver cut too close to another car, overcorrected and drifted back into the slow lane – where he struck a black 2014 Mercedes.
Officers said the Buick veered out of control, hit an embankment and catapulted into the air – ejecting the driver. It did not appear the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
First responders raced to the accident scene shortly after it was reported. The driver of the involved car was seen being given CPR at the scene.
The Wilder onramp to eastbound Highway 24 was closed for investigation into the crash.
Wednesday’s crash is the second fatal accident on the Orinda stretch of Highway 24 in two months and the third fatal accident in Lamorinda.
