CHP: How Do We Keep Our Young Drivers Safe?

by ECT

MARTINEZ, CA – Remember when high schools offered a class to teach driver safety? Students would have to listen to the instructor talk about traffic laws, watch “Red Asphalt”, and learn about the consequences of poor driving choices. Now it’s up to the busy parents to teach driver safety to their children. What resources are available to help them?

CHP-Smart-StartNo parent wants to be given the news that their teenage son or daughter has been killed in a horrific traffic collision. The statistics are frightening. Teen drivers are found at fault in 66% of ALL FATAL collisions that they are involved in, although they only represent 4% of the state’s licensed drivers. The leading cause of DEATH for Americans 15 to 20 years old is motor vehicle collisions. What can a parent do to prevent this horrible tragedy from happening to their teen?

The California Highway Patrol, Contra Costa Office conducts a two hour driver safety education class called Start Smart, which targets new and future licensed teenage drivers 15 through 20 years of age and their parents or legal guardians. To see a list of all of our upcoming classes and events or to enroll yourself and your teen in one of the upcoming Start Smart classes go to CHP-ContraCosta.Eventbrite.com and sign up with ease.

How about the parents set a good example. I don’t know how many people I have seen run red lights with the teenagers in the car.
