Brentwood Crossing Guard Wearing Hijab Heckled by Protesters at Ron Nunn Elementary School

by ECT

On Tuesday, the Brentwood Union School District Superintend made parents at Ron Nunn Elementary School aware that a crossing guard was harassed for wearing a hijab by a group of protesters and hate speech was used.

According to Superintendent Dana Eaton, the protesters were approximently 8-10 people in size and were shouting in front of students against mask when the hate speech was stated. As of Wednesday morning, dozens of parents brought her thank you cards, flowers and offered support.

The District called the Brentwood Police Department who are investigating.

Dear Ron Nunn School Community,

I need to inform you of a situation that your children may have witnessed this morning. As students were arriving at school, a group of protestors were near the intersection of Central and Rose Brook Terrace. A Ron Nunn School Crossing Guard, who wears a hijab, was crossing students, when the statement “This is not the Taliban, this is America, take off your mask” was directed at her multiple times.

This type of hate speech has no place in our schools or in our community. I am devastated for our dedicated crossing guard who had to endure that speech this morning. I am very concerned that multiple students heard the same hate speech on their way to school and wanted to alert parents. We reported this incident to the Brentwood Police Department.

I want to publicly apologize to both our crossing guard and any students that were impacted by what took place. Ron Nunn School has counseling available for any students who might need to speak with someone.

Sincerely, Dana Eaton,

Ed.D Superintendent, Brentwood Union School District

Brentwood Police have issued no statement on the incident as of Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, not surprising. This clearly demonstrates how much overlap there is between the “anti-mask” crowd and the racist crowd.

Robert, suggesting that because one supports ending the mask mandate for kids makes one a racist, sounds like saying because you wear a Hijab you’re part of the Taliban. Thanks for showing all your ignorance.

That is not what I said, Randy. I said the two groups have a lot of overlap in their “membership.”

And when you paint groups of people with broad strokes, you’re doing exactly what they did. And those idiots don’t speak for the rest of us.

Beyond ignorant. Some people think they have all the rights and can inflict their stupidity upon others who they deem don’t have any. They’ll find out how wrong they are as they continue to outnumbered by good, inclusive, law-abiding people.

If bigotry is a crime in America, those protesters would be serving time behind bars. Either way, they should be tracked down, arrested, and charged with a
hate crime.
