Senator Leyva Secures $50 Million for After School Programs

by ECT

SACRAMENTO – Senator Connie M. Leyva (D-Chino) today issued the following statement after the California State Senate passed the 2017-2018 state budget by the June 15th constitutional deadline:

“As a lifelong advocate for working families, I am very proud that this year I was able to successfully fight for and secure $50 million for the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program that will benefit hundreds of thousands of primarily low income students across the state.  This much needed and long overdue investment will keep the doors open on after school programs that help kids succeed in school and keep them out of trouble.  As a working mom, I am very aware of the need for quality and safe after school programs for children—and today’s budget delivers for families in the Inland Empire and across California.”

“I thank Senate President pro Tem Kevin de Léon, Senate Budget Committee Chair Holly Mitchell and Senator Anthony Portantino—as well as Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon and Assemblymembers Phil Ting and Kevin McCarty—for their important roles in securing these vital dollars on behalf of California children and families.”
