Public Health Advisory in Contra Costa County Due to Smoke from Northern California Fires

by ECT

The Contra Costa Public Health Department reports that parts of our county have unhealthy air due to smoke and a public health advisory has been issued.

Since Friday afternoon, smoke has arrived in the county from the Camp Fire in Butte County while the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air Alert through Monday.  The Camp Fire, as of 9:40 am Saturday, has burned an estimated 100,000 acres and is just 20% contained.

Please follow the following tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:

  • Everyone, especially children, should reduce outdoor activity.
  • Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease such as asthma, should avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
  • Masks are not a substitute for staying indoors. Masks such as the N-95 are not effective for untrained users and may be dangerous for people with lung or heart conditions. N-95 masks may be helpful for people who must work outdoors if properly fitted.
  • Employees should work with their employers for direction on when/how to use N-95 masks.
  • Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms like repeated coughing, difficulty breathing, wheezing, chest tightness, palpitations, nausea, fatigue or lightheadedness.

The day the fire started I was in the Claycord area and it was worse the smoke was actually visible blowing through the trees in that neighborhood, it has definitely been affecting my breathing which is already a chronic health issue. It’s starting to sound like like this was yet another PG&E power line issue, for the amount of money and lives lost they could easily start putting these power lines under ground.
The other issue that I find hard to understand is the people I see driving through the smoke and tossing hot cigarette butts out the window, are people really that stupid or just completely unaware of what a**holes they are.

completely unaware of what a**holes they are.

This is NOT a PG&E problem! This is our problem for electing liberal idiot representatives who sit it out in Sacramento and keep responsible parties from thinning out forests, clearing out the dry vegetation in the vast canyons we have in this state. The so-called “environmentalists” have resisted any rational handling of this problem. Instead of exercising in their country-club prisons, the inmates should be put to work clearing out dry vegetation.

So instead of holding the corporation accountable for their actions, you’d rather invest in slave labor to suffice? You bag on liberals, yet republicans downplay SCIENCE and SCIENTISTS who’ve predicted this stuff and climate change? You’re a disgrace. Do some research and go apologize to your community.

I say put the blame were it belongs, with PG&E. A few years back they fired a bunch of the line workers and posted record profits. Two years later they had alot of outages so they had to hire even more line workers to play catch up. PG&E then went to the PUC to raise rates to pay for the additional workers and we’re told no. They went ahead and raised rates anyway. It’s more of the same now. This time they are paying all kinds of money on adds trying to a make them look better rather than paying for all the damage they have caused. It’s about time they are held accountable.

Jerry, those “scientists” rely on grants given them by liberal organizations so they have to tow the party line. Aren’t you aware how this works? Scientists are mostly in academia and they must publish to survive! We have always had climate change since the time the earth was formed. If you have a problem with climate change then I suggest you have a talk with THE SUN! We Republicans are totally pro-science, but not JUNK science with many “scientists” are pushing (Think of AL GORE). Just as many scientists know that there will always be changes and human have very little to do with them …. I personally think the problem is with over population and population distribution. I’m not apologizing to anybody because no apology is necessary.

Do your research Jerry…..literally just do your research. Those environmentalists CAUSED these fires to turn into catastrophic disasters. Regardless of how the fire started (yes whoever is responsible should be held accountable) they turned into horrific disasters because of these idiot environmentalists who are so arrogantly convinced of their line of thinking that they have lost all vestiges of common sense. They file injunctions to stop all forest management and logging. Fires need fuel….provide fuel and they spread rampantly. You provide fuel by NOT allowing clearcutting, removal of dead trees, and grazing. Proper forest management removes the fuel for the fire thereby minimizing damages. Do your research and you will see this is exactly what has been happening. Look at pictures of properly managed forests and grazed land and burned forest and un-grazed unmanaged lands. Climate change is not even a discussion to have…..the question is whether climate change is man made or not. And you can thank those environmentalists for HORRIFIC pollution due to these fires that THEIR policies turned into awful disasters. So there’s your man-made pollution…..well done.

FIRST, the cause of the fire is still to be determined. They are working instead on pulling out charred bodies from homes and cars.
SECOND, the forests you speak of are for the most part on federal land, managed by the Forest Service. This is not on CA. In addition, Malibu isn’t anywhere near a forest. Stop breathing in right-wing propaganda. It’s more toxic than our air.
THIRD, though the cause of any of these fires are yet to be determined, the consist increase in temperatures in CA, together with the chronic drought and the winds, cause these fires to catastrophically spread. THIS IS SCIENCE. trump and his ilk continue to deny climate change. It is a party of deniers. Climate is our real fear, not toddlers at the border.
FOURTH, I lived in the area devastated by the Oakland fires. Yearly, the fire department came knocking on my door to assess the danger of possible overgrowth. I was given a ticket if I did not prune trees and clear out shrubs. Are. you confident this wasn’t done in these areas of fires?
THE REALITY is that trump has made that comment with no facts – his modus operendi – for an altogether different reason. He is clearing a path as fast as fire so that our federal lands can be used for his and his cronies’ financial gain. WAKE UP!

Environmentalists are wrong sometimes. Nov 11, 2018 - 1:13 am

Elizabeth is right. Friggin tree huggers are so stupid. Fires will damage far more than pre trimming and thinning. We vote for wimp politicians who only think about themselves. The forest service needs to get its act together with Cal Fire and do some prevention work. The reactive stuff is not doing our environment and our health any good.
