A Chihuahua rescued from center of I-680 in Walnut Creek during rush hour on May 13 has been reunited with its family, Contra Costa Animal Services officials said.

Here is the Press Release

Martinez CA. On Tuesday the 13th of May, 2014, Animal Services was contacted by the owners of the rescued dog, who was being held as a stray. The family provided sufficient evidence to verify that the dog was in fact their pet. As you would expect, the previously shy and timid dog responded ecstatically when her family arrived to redeem her.   She was returned to her family on Thursday.

Prior to releasing “Freeway,” (her shelter nickname), Contra Costa County Ordinances required her to be licensed, spayed, and implanted with a microchip. Animal Services also visited the home to inspect the property to help ensure that the yard is sufficiently secure and provide information on how to prevent future escapes.

We’d like to thank both our local California Highway Patrol Officers who responded to the initial calls and all of those in the public who sent positive messages of support. This incident and the coverage that it generated helped to publicize the plight of shelter animals. It serves as a reminder that there are adoptable animals, awaiting loving homes, in shelters world-wide.

Please adopt from a shelter and spay or neuter your pets!

Great about the reuniting, but troubled that the owners lacked responsibility to have spayed, licensed & microchipped before. Should be a no-brainer to do these commonsense things!

So how did their little one end up where this pup was found???? This wasnt just something the dog did itself???? I really hope they check into this because not only was it irresponsible to not be spayed and licensed…….the puppy could not have survived running across this freeway and hopping on this wall where he was found!!!! Somewhere something is missing from this story!!!!
