Memoirs of a Dog Group Hope to Save Contra Costa Dogs in Shelters

by ECT

Memoirs of a Dog is a Facebook Page dedicated to rescuing dogs who are set to be killed after being placed in an Animal Shelter by owners who no longer want them, picked up as strays off the street or dropped in back kennels with no story at all as to why they are there.

The organization has one goal in mind and that is to visit with dogs, get to know their history, personality and traits while sharing it with families looking to adopt a new pet. The group of five volunteers includes the founders Sofie Roman, Jana Korner and three 3 photographers.

They currently focus on the Contra Costa Animal Shelter in Martinez and the Antioch Animal Services shelter in Antioch.

In Martinez, a dog that comes into the shelter gets put on a 72 hour hold with no guarantees it will ever be seen by the public. Sofie and Jana started the page as a way to ensure dogs find the best homes based on personalities and lifestyles. The members of the group volunteer their time at a shelter each week—a combined 20+ hours and visit with each dog.  After visiting with a dog, they will do a write up and share it

The purpose is to provide a service to help folks find the perfect pet. In most cases, people go to the shelter and browse and only get a few minutes with the dog where a few seconds sometimes is enough to scare people away due to a growl or teeth showing due to the stressful atmosphere of a shelter—but with a few more minutes with a potential family, the dog may be a true sweetheart.  This group hopes to be able to provide families with more information to peak interest and help find a good fit.

Each week, they will share stories of different dogs that are going to be put to sleep in hopes of saving a dog’s life. For more information on Memoirs of a Dog, visit their Facebook Page

Meet Raider AKA Baby

Raider is a over 1 year old Shih Tzu male. Raider was found in Antioch back in March where he was severely matted and screamed at the slightest touch!  Raider was very much abused and neglected and just in sad shape! He had some serious health problems. His right eye was damaged and he had such a foul odor coming from his ears.

Raider went to UCDavis where although we tried to save with medication, had to have his eye removed. Both ears had foxtails in them, foxtails have been removed, ears cleaned and no more pain. Raider has also now been neutered!

Raider is excellent with dogs of all sizes, cats, and kids.  Raider is currently being fostered through Antioch Animal services Come on down and meet this little guy…he is sure to steal your heart!  ID#A111047

What a great idea they came up with. Thank you for your time and for giving these animals the exposure for a better second chance!
