Contra Costa Animal Services Offering Free Adoptions This Week to Alleviate Shelter Overcrowding

by ECT

All animal adoptions free to the public at CCAS’ Martinez and Pinole shelters

Martinez, CA – Contra Costa Animal Services (CCAS) will be offering free adoptions of all animals from Wednesday, October 19th through Sunday October 23rd. People interested in taking advantage of this free adoption promotion can visit CCAS’ Martinez and Pinole shelters. The free adoption special includes all fees associated with adopting an animal, including: adoption fees, spay/neuter, micro-chipping and vaccination.

The free adoption promotion is an effort to alleviate shelter overcrowding at CCAS’ Martinez and Pinole Shelters. Due to increased amount of stray animals coming into the County’s care, some as a result of the inclement weather over the weekend, CCAS is seeking to find homes for the hundreds of animals currently in our shelters.

As we enter the winter months, with weather changing from warm and sunny to cold and wet, CCAS expects to see an increase in stray animal coming into County shelters. Pet owners should take the following steps to ensure that their animals remain safe, and that they are able to be reunited with their pet if it becomes lost:

  • Make sure your animal is licensed in Contra Costa County – Licensed animals have a much greater percentage of being reunited with their families than animals that are not licensed.
  • Ensure that your animal is microchipped – Microchipping your animal is the most effective way to ensure that you will be reunited with your lost pet, in the event that it winds up in a local shelter.
  • Safeguard your home from inclement weather – Winter weather can often cause doors, gates and windows to open, allowing your pet an avenue of escape. Ensuring that your house is able to keep your animals safe and confined during the winter is an important step to keeping pets from becoming lost.
  • Ensure that your pets are spayed and neutered – Contra Costa County has a significant pet overpopulation problem. Ensuring that pets are spayed and neutered is the most important step in addressing our community’s pet overpopulation issues.
  • If your pet becomes lost – Please call Contra Costa Animal Services at (925) 335-8300 to talk to our lost and found department, who will assist you in your search for your lost pet.
