CHP Pursuit Ends with Two in Custody

According to the California Highway Patrol, at approximately 12:12 AM, a pursuit of a silver Dodge Charger was initiated by CHP – Solano. The vehicle was fleeing in excess of 130 MPH as it traveled from eastbound I-80 to southbound I-680 towards CHP – Contra Costa jurisdiction.

CHP – Solano units successfully deployed a spike strip near Marshview Road. The suspect vehicle continued southbound on I-680 at speeds of between 60 and 100 MPH swerving between multiple lanes of traffic as CHP – Contra Costa units assumed primary responsibility of the pursuit.

During this time air support was provide by CHP Helicopter 30. The Charger veered to the left; collided with the center dividing wall of southbound I-680, south Livorna Road; and careened into the #2 lane where it came to rest.

CHP officers, with the assistance of a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy and his police K-9 arrested the driver, Ricky Wheeler, Jr. (34) of San Mateo and the passenger, Jermaine Crumb, Jr. (36) also of San Mateo without incident.

Numerous guns and ammunition were located within the vehicle.

Both suspects had extensive criminal histories and the driver also had a no bail warrant. Both previously convicted felons were booked at the Martinez Detention Facility for multiple gun related violations as well as the failure to yield.

The Dodge Charger had been rented from Hertz Rent A Car.
