CHP: Big Rig Catches Fire on I-80, Driver Pulled to Safety

by ECT

Early this morning at about 1:20am, Contra Costa CHP was advised of an overturned big rig that was fully engulfed in fire at I-80 eastbound, at the Pomona Street off ramp in Crockett. Upon CHP and emergency personnel arrival, the driver of the Big Rig had been pulled away from the burning wreckage by Good Samaritans and had only minor injuries. Unfortunately a short time later while traffic was slowed due to the overturned Big Rig, another driver drove into the back of another vehicle, causing major injuries. After the driver was life flighted to Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo, unfortunately he was pronounced deceased. The Contra Costa Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners office will be handling the release of the identity of the male driver killed in the second collision.

In the initial investigation regarding the first collision, it appears the driver (29yr old man from Hayward) allowed his 2013 Volvo Big Rig to drift towards the divider that separates the Pomona Street off ramp and I-80, collided with it and overturned onto I-80. Then the Big Rig burst into flames. Thankfully some Good Samaritans stopped and pulled the driver away from the wreckage and he only sustained minor injuries. But the entire freeway was blocked due to the wreckage.

While traffic control was being conducted and traffic was slowed due to the overturned Big Rig, at about 3:54am, a driver (67yr old man from Fairfield) failed to safety slow for the traffic and drove his 1999 Toyota Camry directly into the back of a stopped Big Rig in the traffic, causing a second collision in the same location, and he sustained major injuries. The male driver and female passenger of that Big Rig were not injured. CHP officers arrived and began life saving procedures until paramedics also arrived to continue the effort. The man was then life flighted by helicopter to Kaiser Hospital in Vallejo but tragically pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Traffic on I-80 eastbound has been effected since about 1:22am, with only one lane of eastbound traffic open. Traffic is extremely heavy and backed up past Appian Way. The estimated full opening of the highway is approximately 10am.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in these collisions, but both are still under investigation. If anyone witnessed them or the events leading up to them, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.
