Fatal Head-on collision on Byron Hwy

This morning, 7-11-2017 at approximately 0935 hours, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a collision on Byron Hwy and N. Bruns Road in Byron. Upon CHP arrival, it was determined this was a two vehicle, head-on fatal collision.

A blue Honda Civic sedan and a gold Mazda minivan were involved in a head-on collision on Byron Hwy at Bruns Road. Unfortunately the male driver of the Honda Civic was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The initial investigation with witness provided information suggests the blue Honda Civic was traveling westbound at approximately 50 mph on Byron Hwy and the gold Mazda minivan was traveling eastbound at approximately 50 mph as well on Byron Hwy. As the two vehicles approached each other, for unknown reasons the male driver of the blue Honda Civic veered across the solid double yellow lines and into the opposite lane of travel directly in front of the Mazda minivan. The two vehicles collided head-on. The male driver of the Mazda minivan suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek.

At this time traffic is backed up in both directions on Byron Hwy and partially blocked due to this investigation. The estimated time of opening both lanes of travel is approximately two hours.

This is an ongoing investigation and it’s unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved in the collision at this time. If anyone has any further information regarding this incident, please contact Contra Costa CHP at 925-646-4980 and contact Officer Gallegos, who is handling the investigation. Thank you.
