Bethel Island: 1 Injured, 7 Evacuated After Boat Catches Fire

Just after 7:00 am Monday, the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District responded to the 1900 block of Taylor Road on Bethel Island on a report of a boat fire.

The District respond, who was delayed because zero visibility due to heavy fog, located a boat that was fully engulfed in flames.

According to Battalion Chief Craig Auzenne, he said one resident was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries from smoke inhalation while another 7 people were evacuated from the dock as the gangway burned away and were trapped–in total, 9 people trapped on the dock with two people opting to stay on their boat. Private vessels were used to move the occupants from the dock to land.

Auzenne said that the boat that caught fire was 20-30 feet in size and was no mostly under water, but said if other nearby boats had also caught fire, they could have had a major incident.

The District had assistance from Contra Costa County Fire who provided an engine along with a fire boat. Power to the dock has also been cut as a precaution.

The incident is under investigation.

It was a matter of time. The drug environment there is pervasive and the cause of many issues on the island. It’s about time something was done.

Hmmmmm, how can you be stuck at the dock on your boat? Could you have not unhooked your boat and float it out of the berth? I am so lost
