Update via Antioch Unified School District

Dear AUSD families and the larger Antioch community,

On Friday night, following a peaceful athletic event, a DVHS student was shot in the parking lot. The student has since passed away from his injuries. Our hearts and sympathies are with the families during this time of unimaginable pain.

We, along with the rest of AUSD, denounce this senseless violence and call on the community to come together to address such vicious brutality. Our children must be taught that solving disagreements with violence is not the answer and that there are other ways to resolve our differences that do not result in the unjust and unnecessary killing of our youth. Finally, we ask that everyone in this community and nearby communities, model the love and peace they hope to create.

Grief counselors will be on site tomorrow.

With heavy hearts,

Stephanie Anello, Superintendent
Bukky Oyebade, Principal Deer Valley High School

UPDATE
The victim has been identified Jonathan Parker, 16, who was a Deer Valley student. A GoFundMe has been launched: Click here

This is what you get when stinky ghetto sewer rats are let into Antioch via Section 8 housing. This is no surprise!

Nikki E. Feb 1, 2020 - 11:48 pm

You sound ridiculous! Where at in this article did it state that the people involved in this incident were on Section 8 housing? And why are you calling them “stinky sewer rats”? This article stated that someone was injured and you immediately make a statement that is irrelevant to this unfortunate incident.

Do you think that someone shooting at kids after a high school basketball game is a good, upstanding citizen? Get outta here with your liberal non-since….if you shoot a kid at a school, your worse then a sewer rat Nikki. If you stand up for the sewer rat demanding more respect for the suspect, then YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!

Simone Feb 2, 2020 - 7:54 am

It was a kid who shot at the kid. Do you even know the full story. I don’t think you do because I was right there when everything happened.

ECT Feb 2, 2020 - 1:42 pm

Did you tell PD who the shooter was?

LaTonya L Feb 2, 2020 - 4:20 pm

So are you saying that only kids that come from poor backgrounds are the ones out there doing this .?

Mrs Mills Feb 6, 2020 - 1:00 am

I think she was sticking up for the disabled elderly and good people that need sec 8 to survive….imho….

Kim Jones Feb 2, 2020 - 1:59 pm

I think all of you sound beyond ignorant really. This young man was the nephew of a very close friend. The pain they are going through is unimaginable. Instead of coming together as a community and at least sending prayers there way. You guys are on here acting like immature, a******! Disgusting.

Lucy Brown Feb 2, 2020 - 7:29 pm

Prayers won’t bring the kid back. They are a waste of time! You can pray until hell freezes over. What needs to be done is to assist in finding the culprit and bringing him or her to justice!

George Mathews Feb 3, 2020 - 5:55 am

Sorry, Kim. No prayers. Fact is, there’s a lawless culture, among young people especially. Don’t know when or why we have gone from fights to shootings. But here we are. Not going to waste one second mourning the loss of life, but will reflect on the pain being suffered by the family. It’s just plain stupid for guns to be so prevalent among young people these days

Dee Feb 2, 2020 - 2:26 pm

Define “stinky ghetto sewer rats” Who exactly do you really mean?

Sandra Feb 2, 2020 - 7:35 pm

To, the “dirty stinking ghetto sewer rats” are the criminals brought here through the Section 8 program from dumps like Oakland and Richmond. They ruined both of those cities and now have ruined Antioch and other cities here and have disrupted classes in our schools — in particular at Deer Valley High from the time that school was built.

Sonia Jones Feb 4, 2020 - 1:58 am

That A-Hole, “Feddy” Glover (District 5 Supervisor) was the one who kept encouraging the criminal element from Oakland and Richmond to bring their Section 8 vouchers to this area and idiot landlords accommodated them . . because they wanted the rest of us to make their mortgage payment and the taxpayers didn’t put two-plus-two together. Antioch, Pittsburg, Bay Point have now become ghettos and we an see the outcome. Now old “Feddy” wants to continue ruining cities by running for reelection. Like we didn’t have enough of him already?

Patricia rincon Feb 4, 2020 - 5:15 am

You are a disgrace to the human race , he is from there , born and raised so who are you calling sewer rats ?. Only sewer rats I know are your red neck meth head people in Antioch . Dumb broad

Grace Feb 4, 2020 - 3:13 pm

Hey Patricia! The “dirty, stinky ghetto sewer rat” is the one who shot this boy and caused his death. They were not revering to the victim. FYI, Antioch was founded by “red necks” who kept the town from going to the criminals for many decades.

Take your children out of public schools! They do not teach anything besides agendas that are led by liberal satanists!

Dawn Welles Feb 1, 2020 - 11:04 pm

Our 4 children are ages 8 to 14 (the younger ones are twins) and we took them out of public schools and they are so grateful because they actually get to learn something in their private schools. I think it’s actually CHILD ABUSE to have kids in government schools.

Dana Roach Feb 2, 2020 - 7:33 am

Yes, and your children are probably prime suspects for school shootings. It’s easy to blame the public school system rather take responsibility for your failed attempt as being parents. I really love how you guys spew hate all over the internet, however would NEVER say these things face to face.

Martin Feb 2, 2020 - 7:48 pm

Just how many children have been shot in PRIVATE schools? I’ll sit back and wait for your response!

Richard Feb 2, 2020 - 7:55 pm

Just how many kids, who attended private schools, shot anyone in any school?

Diana Feb 2, 2020 - 8:08 pm

Dana! I know this is Super Bowl Sunday and you’ve gotten an early start on your drinking cheap swill again, so put down the bottle and go to bed! The Niners lost, by the way! You can cry about it tomorrow.

Dana Roach Feb 2, 2020 - 8:24 pm

So, never been a 49ers fan, hate them. If you wanna talk shit I will be at the 7-11 to get gas at 5am. I will be in the 2019 White Ford 250 quad cab with Nevada Plates off Hillcrest. You can approach me inside or outside which ever you prefer while I sip on my black coffee and stomp a mud hole In your ass. By the way I drink whiskey straight and my kids go to public school and if they get out of line I whoop their ass, but it’s funny because they get straight A’s and never been in trouble. You know one of my boys have a paid Scholarship to the university of Texas to play baseball???? Hmmm I guess public schools are bad

Debra St. John Feb 3, 2020 - 12:04 am

Dana Roach — It is because we are responsible parents that we put our kids in private schools where they don’t have to have their education interrupted by unruly, disruptive out-of-the-area punks!

Dana the BP Feb 3, 2020 - 1:58 pm

Oh Dana… your F truck is likely a 89 Camry, black coffee a Maddog and you have never been up at 5am. These comments are from people who are sick and tired of the plague that has ruined east county. It is what it is. You people have ruined what used to be a pretty nice area.

Pay your tax Feb 3, 2020 - 7:06 pm

Dana be sure to register those out of state plates within 20 days of bringing it to California. Stop using Nevada to avoid smog and pay your fair share.

D Feb 6, 2020 - 9:36 pm

Smart parent!

Omar Alcazar Feb 4, 2020 - 2:04 am

Hey Dana! It’s easy for kids to bet A’s when education has been dumbed down to the point where it’s not even an education. Only ONE kid should be getting an A … not 40 kids. Even universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc.) have had their curriculum dumbed down! This was done so that minorities could get in and even with a dumbed down course work they don’t get it. Even with TUTORING … nothing works.

Simone Feb 2, 2020 - 7:51 am

I’m in a pic school and I’m thriving. It’s about the environment most of the time. Not everyone wants to go to a private school

Dee Feb 2, 2020 - 2:24 pm

Well can you provide the funding for those parents who can’t afford private schools? If you are not then work to make the schools better…not offer elitist troupes abot the public school system.

Terry Wilde Feb 2, 2020 - 7:39 pm

So? Now you want private schools to be ruined too? Luckily, private schools will not take troublemakers or if they do, they soon kick them out. The parents have a lot to say how those schools are run and who gets in.

Debra St. John Feb 3, 2020 - 12:09 am

Is there a problem with elitist “troupes?” I don’t want disruptive punks in private schools. The reason we put our kids in those schools is to get them away from people who have nothing better to do but create problems.

Natalie Blackburn Feb 2, 2020 - 8:03 pm

My siblings and I are so grateful to our parents for sending all 5 of us to private schools so we could be save and actually learn something. We also thank them for being there for us all the time.

George Mathews Feb 3, 2020 - 6:01 am

Dana… thanks for letting us know about you and your out of state plates. Seems like a note to DMV/DMV may be in order, as we know that a nice, law abiding, citizen like you surely wants to be legit. Also, thanks for confirming that that 7-11 you’re going to be at caters to people who are uncivilized. I appreciate the confirmation

Dana Roach Feb 11, 2020 - 10:32 am

In the Military asshole! I don’t have to register my truck in your shitty State. Eat a dick

Yeahright Feb 2, 2020 - 12:15 pm

Is there any update on this young man’s condition?
There is so much discussion and speculation about what and how this happened, but I feel we’re over looking a most important aspect…how is the recipient of three gunshots doing? My heart goes out to the family.

Linda A Feb 2, 2020 - 2:19 pm

Sadly he died.

Yeahright Feb 2, 2020 - 5:10 pm

This was not the update that I wanted to see. I can’t even fathom what this family is going through. My condolences.

Panther girl Feb 2, 2020 - 3:04 pm

wow.. y’all sound stupid. not all. but Tiffany and That Guy sound real ghetto actually.. and to bring political parties in this is disgusting. This kind of bashing and bullying only bring more harm. Our schools are doing everything they can to make our Antioch schools safe and happy and teaching kids whose most parents work two or three jobs.. and although there is an element who come from homes where they are hungry, and some homeless, families struggling where section 8 or not. Do you think Section 8 is a picnic? some are so jealous of folks getting cheap rent but do you really want to be that poor, that broke? no. It is high time ALL parents start teaching more tolerance and love and acceptance.. kids hear you.. kids hear parents saying things like Libtards, and Ghetto, and Section 8.. and they pass that on to the innocent kids. Do you do volunteer work? do you volunteer to do anything at the schools? you all need to think about what YOU are doing to help.. not what other families are doing. God Bless this young man and his family.. lets all strive to make this the last.

Cynthia C. Feb 4, 2020 - 2:10 am

If the parents work two or three jobs, then they are living in the wrong state! They obviously can’t afford to live here and working that much means they are not spending time with their kids, as they should. There are other areas and states where they could hold ONE job and do some real parenting and not have to struggle in a state where the cost of living is so high.

Martin Feb 4, 2020 - 3:30 pm

Section 8 is about the taxpayer financing the mortgage for the landlord. He gets taxpayer money and that’s just not right. 30% is what the tenant pays to the landlord .. and that’s 30% of what the tenant earns which may next-to-nothing, the rest is supplied by the taxpayer — so the landlord pays nothing. Why should I or other taxpayers be paying someone else’s mortgage?

Rhonda Sun Feb 4, 2020 - 3:37 pm

Panther Girl! You need to brush up on your reading comprehension. Tiffany has it right. She nailed it.

Tru Feb 2, 2020 - 4:09 pm

Unfortunately this is exactly what Tiffany says it is. Everyone who lived in Oakland in section 8 moved to Antioch with housing vouchers. Antioch used to be safe. I graduated from Deer Valley. Now it’s the new Oakland

Bryan Feb 4, 2020 - 2:16 am

My grandmother, who was born in Antioch and lived here her entire life, just told me how she saw this city starting to slowly disintegrate and then the disintegration became more accelerated. Much of it was due to very poor management by the city government over the decades. I can see that this has not stopped.

These days, it is essential that a lot of security be provided for any event be in high school ones or others. People go totally crazy these days. Anything sets them off. This is normal if an area is overcrowded with people.

Mark Mason Feb 2, 2020 - 8:00 pm

There should always be security people inside the gym and outside in the parking lot and stay there until everyone leaves. Maybe games should be played while it’s still daylight like 4 or 5 pm for better visibility of any troublemakers

Karen Feb 3, 2020 - 12:44 am

A tragic end to a young life.

Michele Lane Feb 3, 2020 - 5:55 pm

A young man is gone. His family is bearing unimaginable pain, and people want to trash talk. None of that will bring him back.

Heaven Help Us Feb 3, 2020 - 4:49 am

I hope the student who passed and his family get justice. Anyone who thinks firing 3 shots into some one is acceptable behavior needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This ain’t the movies, people lie down and don’t get up. It’s a miracle no one else was hit. 16 and dead…ridiculous.

George Mathews Feb 3, 2020 - 6:05 am

No more night time games for either school. Everything in broad daylight where there’s no place to lurk and ambush. More security cameras at all events—for both schools. And Antioch USD must provide additional security, or else cancel all after school activities

Wow , I was really thinking he would make it. Prayers for all his family and friends. It makes me so sad to see all these teens doing any type of crimes but especially killing.
These are to be the best years of their life with nothing but great memories. It is too sad that they have to worry about things like ,” Is it safe to go to games?” Is it even safe to go to school. My question is why ? Why do some kids even think of this ? I was miserable in school because of bullies but I never worried about them shooting me. ;(

Roxanne Fox Feb 4, 2020 - 3:22 pm

Even going to the grocery store is no longer safe! Schools are not a safe haven any longer, let alone attending games where there is competition. This is why so many parents home school their kids. Soon, kids will be getting their education on their computers and won’t have to take their lives into their own hands and wind up in dangerous situations like they do now. There probably will be no need for school buildings either. Curriculum will be designed online and then you can pass and print out your diploma.

Alex Feb 3, 2020 - 6:45 pm

Does anyone know the ethnicity of the suspect and victim? Yes, it matters to me.

Jermiah H Feb 4, 2020 - 7:06 am

Lets ban guns because guns are the problem not criminals with guns. (I’m being sarcastic) RIP Johnathan.
