Shortly after we posted this story, Bobbi Mauler of the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Leo Lopez will not be facing charges in the fatal shooting.

No further information was provided.

Original Release:

On February 5 at approximately 8:30 pm Antioch Police Officers were dispatched to 20 E. 18th Street on the reports of shots fired in the Rite Aid parking lot.

Upon arrival Officers located 37 year old Leo Lopez of Antioch. Lopez advised he was just the victim of a carjacking at gunpoint and his white van was gone. Almost simultaneously the Antioch Police Department began receiving calls of a white van that had crashed into a parked car and came to rest in the front yard of a residence on W. 17th Street, west of A Street.

IMG_9195Officers responded to that scene as well.

According to Antioch Police Lieutenant Tom Fuhrmann, on 17th Street they found Lopez’ van had crashed and the driver, a 27 year old male out of Pittsburg, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was deceased.

“Upon further investigation it was learned that Lopez had parked in the Rite Aid lot and was sitting in his van while using his phone. While sitting in his van a subject unknown to him opened the door and got in and attempted to rob him at gunpoint,” explained Fuhrmann. “Lopez fled from the van and the unknown subject drove off in Lopez’s van. As the van was driving away, Lopez produced his own firearm and fired multiple shots into his own van.”

Lopez was subsequently arrested and will be booked into the Contra Costa County Jail for Murder.

This case is still under investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

I don’t feel he should get charged with murder. yes this is what we have insurance for some people say. but what if he had of came home and found someone stealing his thing in his house and yes he would have home owners insurance should he just sit back and let the person rob is house just because he has owners insurance. No you should put a bullet in his ass this carjacker got what he deserved.

Instead of you people rushing to judgement you should wait till all the fact’s are in cuz a second suspect has been arrested and also been charged with murder . I knew Ricky and he was a good kid with a big heart who got caught up .Who’s to say it wasn’t a set up and made to look like a carjacking !!! I’m just saying though. RIP RICKY ,YOU’LL BE MISSED

I find it hard to believe you could be that stupid. Both you and Totter. Perhaps your personal relationship with the carjacker has clouded your judgement. In which case I’m sorry for you. Fact is, the guy stole a car, and so he got shot. Nothing more to it. You just wanna believe your friend is an angel. But just remember, the devil himself was once an angel.

Totter Feb 9, 2016 - 3:40 pm

He was set up! Don’t believe everything you read! He took the van to escape! Why he was there no one will ever know but, understand he did not carjack. Rip Rick

By the way I bet nobody knew that Leo just got out of jail. I knew Rick personally and he was the victim! For all the people praising Leo must get there facts straight . Thank you Joanna for knowing your facts!

Really I’m a personal friend of mister Lopez and he didn’t just get out of jail for anything. Mr. Lopez is actually a very good person for one he gave me a place to live for almost a year when I was kicked outta my mothers house and had nowhere to stay and he never asked me for anything except to watch the kids every once and a while when him and his wife would go out for a dinner and movie date… Fact is he was carjacked and he carjacked the wrong person and shit happens. That area is not the best part of town u hear gunshots and high speed chases almost every night and that is why my friend was more than likely armed… The guy got what he deserved and just to maybe make u feel better Mr. Lopez has to live with the fact that he took a life. Which does weigh heavily on people doesn’t matter who u are taking another persons life isn’t an easy thing to do but I know that Mr Lopez only half an hour before all this happened had his 3 kids in the car with him… So let me ask u this what would u have done if it was u and by chance u hadn’t dropped ur kids off before u went to rite aid and this strange person carjacked u with ur three kids in the car? Me personally I would have shot this guy in a heart beat even if I had to get shot doing it to protect my children. Luckily junior had dropped his kids off right before all this happened. Also to all the other people out there that said he shot at a man fleeing the scene and that was wrong think about this that man now had his home address and keys to his house and what was to stop him from going there next at some point and robbing him and his family at gunpoint and maybe one or more of the children getting hurt in the process… I may be junior friend but even if I never even knew him I would be saying the same thing and that is right on for defending your personal property and very possibly your family later on.

I didn’t know Lopez just got out of jail, but I’m not surprised. I left a comment on another thread that they’re both thugs. If you’re firing away like that, you’re a lowlife. If it wasn’t a carjacking, what was it? A drug deal gone bad?
