UC Master Gardener Program Hosts Great Tomato Plant Sales

by ECT

Pleasant Hill, CA — The UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County will host its seventh annual Great Tomato Plant Sale in Walnut Creek on April 7, in Antioch on April 14 and in Richmond on April 28.

Mark your calendars now, and check out our 2018 variety lists!  There might be April showers on the 7th, but don’t let that stop you…just wear your rain gear!!

We’ve seeded & germinated and are now nurturing almost 17,500 tomato plants for a total of 85 varieties. Yes, you read that correctly—85 different tomato varieties, the most we have ever offered!  At each sale location, we will be sure to offer tomato varieties that grow well specifically in the very different micro-climates in Contra Costa.  We’re also tending lots of varieties of peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and other summer vegetables that are growing into nice strong plants.

We continue to introduce, along with several new, unusual heirlooms, a wider selection of very special tomato hybrids with the disease-resistance some gardeners need and value, but that also have the great, old-fashioned taste we all treasure in the heirloom tomatoes. These aren’t your store-bought, red rubber balls that are tomatoes in name only! As with our heirlooms, all the hybrid tomatoes we’ve chosen would be difficult to buy locally.

Start your planning with our 2018 variety lists.
