Supervisor Glover Announces Postponement of Youth Summit Over Safety Concerns

by ECT

On Tuesday, Supervisor Federal Glover announced that he is postponing the Youth Summit that was scheduled for Saturday in an effort to address safety and security protocols.

Glover said in his statement that after watching the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio on the heels of the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting, that he wanted to make sure local law enforcement were ready to deal with potential active shooter scenarios and other public safety emergencies.

The Youth Summit aims to unites sixth through twelfth-grade youth with local dignitaries, mentors and community leaders for an incredible day complete with exploration, education, and entertainment.

The event is a community effort to build healthy attributes such as self-esteem, honesty, and integrity. Our goal is to assist our students in constructing the foundation they need to be successful by equipping them with experiences that will enhance their personal and social standards. The interactive workshops provided at the Summit will offer life skills, assist with career development and provide a venue for appropriate activities that reduce the risk of undesirable behavior.

Here is the statement by Supervisor Federal Glover:

Over the weekend, I watched with great sadness as news of the mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio unfolded. These events, barely 14 hours apart, came on the heels of the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting less than one week earlier. Apart from the many lives lost, and the number of individuals hurt, I am stunned by the youthfulness of the shooters.

We can never be sure what influences these individuals. However, after consulting with stakeholders, I have decided to postpone the Youth Summit scheduled for Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Los Medanos College in Pittsburg. This decision was made because we need to evaluate the safety and security protocols that are in place or need to be created.

I will convene a meeting of the stakeholders, including law enforcement, to make sure we are ready to deal with active shooter scenarios and other public safety emergencies that may arise. The youth summit brings together a number of our youth and I need to be confident, as well as be able to assure their parents, that we have taken all reasonable measures to ensure their children’s safety at such a large public event.

As we review our protocols and formulate our plans, we will notify members of the public of our plans for a future youth summit.

Giving in to fear. That’s absurd.

This is stupid. It was not about fear or concern for safety, its that the event was going to be poorly attended. Glover should have held the event because the event is for all the right reasons. Instead, he looks like a fool.
