San Joaquin County: Suspects Arrested in Large Mail Theft Ring

On Mothers Day, May 11, around 6:30 am, Sheriffs Deputies took a report of a vehicle burglary at the Village Oak Center in Stockton. Ashlynn Kay Williams and Shawncy Javon Sargent were captured on video using a stolen ATM Card to get money out of a victims account.

A flyer was made and placed on the Sheriffs Social media sites. At the time of the auto burglary, the suspects identity’s were unknown. Further follow-up produced the listed suspects names and addresses. A surveillance was initiated between patrol deputies and sheriffs detectives yesterday. The suspects’ vehicle was stopped and Rafael Jesus Herrera and his three children were detained. Stolen mail, etc. was located inside the vehicle. The Children were turned over to Child Protective Services. Williams was contacted at her apartment where they also located Sargent. Sargent was identified as the BMA in the flyer, Detectives executed a Search Warrant at the suspects apartment. Investigators located inside the apartment a suit case full of stolen mail, washed checks, electronics for making fraudulent checks, and a credit card scanner.

San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports of mail theft. The suspect’s vehicle belonging to Herrera was active in mail thefts, UPS package thefts and entering open garages and taking items. Williams and Herrera are boyfriend/girlfriend. They have one child together and the other two belong to Herrera. Williams and Herrera’s children were turned over to CPS and are 10, 8 and 4. The suspects vehicle being a 2012 White Jeep registered to Herrera.

  • Ashlynn Williams (1/30/85) was booked on charges of burglary, mail theft, child endangerment, credit card fraud, and unlawful possession of a firearm.
  • Rafael Herrera (10/26/85) was booked on mail theft and child endangerment.
  • Shawncy Sargent (12/1/76) was booked on charges of burglary, credit card theft, possession of an access card.

All three suspects were arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.
