The Pittsburg Police Department sent out a nice letter today highlighting that members of the Pittsburg Police Department traveled to the California Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony in Sacramento which honors officers who have fallen in the line-of-duty the preceding year, recognizing the sacrifice of those loved and left behind.

According to the note, it stated the following:

It is important that those of us left behind, recognize that these officers did not die in vain. The people owe a debt to those who have given their lives, and the peace officers of this state want this memory to stay fresh in the minds of the citizens. Today is a day set aside to reflect on courage and sacrifice; and, to assure that their loss will not be forgotten, and the survivors will always be a part of the police community.

To this day, the Department honors its three line-of-duty deaths in John J. Buckly (12/13/35), Raymod Joseph Giacomelli (04/15/03) and Larry Elwood Lasater (04/25/05)

May 15 is National Law Enforcement Memorial Day. All flags are to be flown at half-staff on this day. This is in the US Flag code. It is down right disgraceful that the cities and local government buildings do not lower their flags as a sign of respect. In Washington DC, the names of the office who were killed in the line of duty from the previous year are added to the national monument. There is a candle light vigil at the monument attended by thousands.

Every year I fly the American Flag at half staff in memory of Officer Dave Checuti Millbrae PD end of watch April 24, 1998.
