A quick response by Jessica Ake and Abdullah Bahaduri saved the life of a resident at an Antioch senior living facility after the resident was seen choking and her lips turned blue.

The incident occurred in the dining room of  The Commons at Dallas Ranch on April 20 where an elderly female resident was sitting by herself and not moving nor talking. Ake explained how she was coming back with a bowl of peaches and caught a glance of the resident. Her face and lips had turned blue.

“I immediately called for help. She was unresponsive and her feet gave out. This was an event that teaches you just how short life can be,” explained Ake.

Bahaduri was cleaning up dishes when he heard Ake calls for help and immediately assisted. He could tell the resident was choking as she passed out from a lack of oxygen and was motionless.

Together, the two got the elderly woman out of her chair and began performing the Heimlich maneuver and that didn’t work as she went limp and gravity brought her to the ground. They continued working on her waiting for the paramedics to arrive.

The airway was blocked and CPR was not working.

Ake recalled how the two of them worked to roll her over on her side while she put her fingers in the resident’s mouth and started pulling out pieces of chicken along with a few taps on her back. After some work the airway then opened up.

“The most rewarding feeling was having her airway cleared and hearing a slight hissing sound from her breathing while seeing her color come back,” said Ake.

Bahaduri admitted he thought the resident had died.

“I looked at her like she was gone as they were doing CPR,” said Bahaduri. “The incident was about 5-minutes, but it felt like forever. When the paramedics arrived, they credited us with doing all the work. It makes me realize how quick things can change in a matter of seconds. I am just glad she is okay.”

According to Dina Osakue, Community Relations Director, the family is extremely grateful to the staff for their quick response and knowing what to do. The resident is also back to normal and shows no effects from the incident.

“We have monthly all staff meeting which always entails some type of training of how we service our residents. Twice a year, there is more extensive training to the caregivers and medication assistants,” explained Osakue. “ Whenever you have an incident like that, it keeps your level of awareness high and on your toes. We are always looking to take care of our residents the best we can.”

An all staff meeting will be held on May 21 at 2:00 pm where Assemblyman Jim Frazier will be presenting a certificate of recognition for Jessica Ake and Abdullah Bahaduri for their actions on April 20. Both Ake and Bahaduri are Antioch residents.
