At 8:29 pm Wednesday, Contra Costa County responded to a vehicle crash at Buchanan Road and Meadows Avenue in Pittsburg.
Upon arrival, Contra Costa Fire reported this was a fatal crash from a head-on collision that was blocking all lanes of traffic. Pittsburg Police were still responding to the scene.
As of 8:36 pm, an additional code 3 ambulance was requested along with additional Contra Costa Fire units.
By 8:54 pm, firefighters reported the patient trapped had been extricated.
By 9:01 pm, 1 patient was transported to John Muir Walnut Creek while fire units were breaking down the scene and became available on scene.
Pittsburg Police released the following message just after 9:00 pm:
Eastbound and Westbound lanes of Buchanan Rd from Loveridge Rd to Sommersville Rd is closed due to a traffic accident fatality. The road will be closed throughout the night and will reopen for the morning commute. Please use Loveridge Rd to E Leland or SR-4 or Sommersville Rd to Delta Fair or SR-4 to travel between Pittsburg and Antioch. Citizens residing off Buchanan Rd please contact the traffic control officer on scene for entrance to and from your residence. PPD
10:30 pm Update per Pittsburg PD
Just after 08:30 this evening, Officers were dispatched to Buchanan Road near Meadows Avenue for a vehicle collision. A 50 year old female was driving E/B on Buchanan Road when her vehicle drifted and struck a vehicle traveling W/B on Buchanan Road. This vehicle was occupied by a male adult.
The female driver was pronounced deceased on scene and the male driver has been transported to a local hospital for complaint of pain. There were no other occupants in either vehicle.
Traffic investigators are responding to the scene and additional information will be released as it becomes available. Buchanan Road between Somerville and Meadows Avenue will be closed for several hours.
