Photos: Antioch Police Net 8-Arrest During Proactive Detail

On the night of Wednesday June 5, we had the opportunity to observe a proactive enforcement detail through the Antioch Police Department which netted 8 arrests for various violations.

I wanted to wait a week to gather my emotions and let it really sink in of what I witnessed and fully comprehend the situation Antioch Police deal with on a daily basis and the dangers of their job–needless to say, I have mad respect for the boys in blue.

During a four-hour period, the unit worked a target neighborhood in Antioch in the Sycamore area and observed it through the eyes of the police department which is an education in itself. Lets just say, these officers are sharp!

I will not be sharing specifics about particular incidents and cannot share all photographs taken, but hopefully this will give you an idea of just how dangerous Antioch has become and why additional resources are needed to clean up the city.

There are some real dangers in Antioch which need to stop being sugar coated and instead truly talked about so the problems can begin to improve.

Nights Recap:

Upon arrival, the sergeant and I met up with his team and that is where the education began. There is something about watching officers in a staging area gearing up which instantly makes you realize the fun and games are over and it’s instantly real. I guess bullet proof vests, loaded weapons and a quick overview of the assignment will do the trick.

The first incident was issuing an arrest warrant.

As we approached the home, officers parked a few houses away and swarmed the home ensuring all exits were blocked in case the suspect tried to flee. Fortunately in this incident, there was no issue and the suspect was arrested without issue.

Let me just say that when you have nearly a dozen officers swarm the home, just give up because in most cases, you will lose the way these guys operate—every detail is planned and multiple back up plans are in place while the suspect has the element of surprise working against them.

Over the course of the next hour, the sergeant and his team patrolled the area observing the neighborhood in action and sharing some of the problem spots and pointing out “the usual suspects”.

After some additional observations, the officers moved in on a drug deal. As soon as the word “he has a gun” was said, all units jetted to the scene to ensure the officers safety. The suspect was apprehended without incident while another suspect was questioned but later released.

After a search of the area, we moved back onto patrol again observing some serious drug action and prostitution activity.  One positive, a stolen motorcycle was recovered where the suspect claimed he purchased a beautiful motorcycle for $300 (pictured below) and had not done the paperwork. Needless to say, he was arrested.

The team then tracked down a group of minors who were messing around on W.10th and J Street for drug use. It turns out; one of the suspects had a warrant while another minor was a run away.

Shortly after that incident, the sergeant and I responded to a call of an officer needing assistance in the apprehension of another suspect who had a warrant out for his arrest. The suspect was aggressive with the officer until the sergeant arrived  where he ultimately realized he wasn’t going anywhere—but mind you, lots of foul language came out of the suspects mouth. It was another arrest.

After patrolling the area some more, the team moved in on a suspicious vehicle and questioned some folks. Turns out, the search took an automatic weapon off the streets where the vehicle was called “security” for a drug dealer.

One of our last calls was observing the rational used to pull over a vehicle full of “gang bangers” where it netted a large amount of drugs from one of the suspects—two of the four suspects were arrested.

Of course, as soon as my ride along ended, there was the stabbing off Delta Fair.

Closing thoughts:

The take away in this ride along was this was on a Wednesday night and some serious stuff went down.

We are talking about Wednesday night—not like it’s a Friday or Saturday night but middle of the week which puts things in perspective. These officers are working on a reduced team due to staffing and did an amazing job in ensuring Antioch was a safer city even if for a short time.

The team I saw was very smooth and calculated in all their actions. They were efficient and nothing was a wasted action—they don’t have that luxury of making a mistake or it could be deadly.

As the City Council moves forward with complimentary tax measures, it’s time to stop saying Antioch’s crime is “bad”, but rather start defining and show how it’s bad to get people to pay attention. Rhetoric will not sell this tax measure but reality will.

The pictures below are just a very small sample of the night’s activities, if you saw it with your own eyes; you would be amazed and shocked about what is going down in certain areas of Antioch.

I for one thought I had an idea of how bad Antioch was, unfortunately, I was wrong because it’s worse and will never question an officer’s motive when he is wearing that badge given what they can potentially deal with on a daily basis.

Sadly, this goes on every day and you exposed just how dangerous my city is. Fantastic pictures, but you have also scared me a bit. Pass the tax Antioch!

This is some crazy stuff. Thanks for taking the time to blog about it and provide details and pictures. Way to go, APD!!!

Anyone else find it funny this site was given access on such a dangerous night? Hmmmmm, no to tax increases and make the renters pay.

Great job Antioch PD

Burk, we want more photographs!!!! These are awesome and great job Antioch PD for getting these low lifes off the streets. Hope you get to do it again and stay safe PD! It’s nice that people get to see the PD in action and trouble being taken off the street.

This is one tax voters would be foolish to reject and this is coming from someone who will never vote for a tax increase on myself. Antioch is a nightmare, fix it and then maybe the city can recover.

Mike, you have done a great service in your efforts to educate the public on just how dangerous this job is. Way too many officers get hurt trying to keep our streets safe.

While a lot of stuff goes down on sycamore, its not the only area in Antioch that has these issues. The job is dangerous, a lot of people wandering our streets have no respect for others, especial police. They believe that the laws and rules of society don’t apply to them. You just have to wonder where did these young adults get this idea from.

Oh and if people would take off their blinders along with their rose colored glasses, you will also see these issues in Oakley and Brentwood!

cme Jun 11, 2013 - 10:44 am

Yes! Too many people have rose colored glasses with blinders on!! It’s time to wake up and realize we now have the same issues as Oakland, Richmond, Stockton and other towns. Antioch, Oakley, and Brentwood are not the quaint, quiet suburbs they once were! I have a teenager so I learned real quick what dangers are lurking out there. Thank goodness he got through them unharmed…..so far. My respect and gratitude goes out to all police officers. And thank you for giving us the real news and not just sugar coated fairytales.

William Jun 11, 2013 - 10:58 am

I hope Brentwood invites you to do this ride along with them because our crime is up and becoming just as bad. These are really nice shots and tell a wonderful story of what Antioch is dealing with on a daily basis.

Mike, thanks for the great reporting! I , too, went on my requested a “ride along” several years ago. What goes on daily in Antioch and all of East County.for that matter. It is worse in Antioch because Antioch PD does not have the staffing to keep it in check. Our PD is awesome and whatever the City Council decides the ballot measure(s) should be the voters need to pass so police and code enforcement can be staffed correctly!

Julio-Antioch Jun 11, 2013 - 11:31 am

Anyone who thinks APD does nothing needs to take a ride along just as Martha Parsons did.

Thanks Mike for a terrific job.

Why do you sheeple always think that throwing money at a problem will fix it. Why doesn’t Antioch PD crack down like this every day? I rarely see them actually on the street. Antioch had money for more officers and decided to use it as salary and benefits claiming it was needed to attract quality and experienced officers. B.S.! What part of “NO NEW TAXES” is it that you all don’t understand? I won’t be buying in Antioch if the sales taxes go up.

LLAB Jun 12, 2013 - 12:06 am

Good Rick, We don’t need you buying in Antioch. Maybe on your way out of town you can take some of the dirt bags with you! Just a thought.

Mike, excellant story and pictures. Antioch residents wake up!!!! APD Officers are putting their lives on the line every day. Both Tax measures need to pass to get Antioch to where our kids and Seniors feel safe going to school or shopping. A 1/2 cent Tax increase won’t keep residents from shopping in Antioch, most aren’t shopping in Antioch now because they don’t feel safe shopping here. Our Seniors are afraid to open their front doors or leave their homes. This is not OK!!!! One Tax measure by itself isn’t enough to get to the 126 Police Officers and 20 CSO”s that Chief Cantando asked for and 4 to 5 Code Enforcement Officers. It’s time for Antioch Residents to stop talking and get behind these 2 Tax Measures. We are at the place and time that if we don’t do something now it may be to late to turn Antioch back into the City we all what to live in.

Martha Jun 11, 2013 - 1:50 pm

Very well said, Bill! We can’t wait!

Julio-Antioch Jun 11, 2013 - 1:50 pm

No, I don’t think it odd. My son has gone several times. You actually are told to stay in the car no matter what but for Burk and the camera who knows.

Donald Freitas Jun 11, 2013 - 4:11 pm

Mike, thank you so much for the article and pictures. Pictures are worth a thousand words and your candid shots speak volumes. Antioch needs to turn this around immediately. Citizens need to stop complaining and support the two measures on the November 5th ballot to increase funding for Antioch’s top priorities- crime, violence and code enforcement. Some people will never stop complaining and pointing fingers at everyone else to do something about this situation, but citizens who want to take back Antioch from the thugs and truly improve our community, our quality of life and support real economic development (jobs, jobs and more jobs) need to vote “yes” on the two measures.

Barbara DuMont Jun 11, 2013 - 5:44 pm

Right now I am listening to the scanner and all hell is breaking loose in Antioch again. They were chasing a suspect down in the Sycamore/Manzantia area. Just as they are getting him in custody, armed 211 at Grocery Outlet 18th and A Street. Don’t know about you, but WOW.

Marty Fernandez Jun 11, 2013 - 5:58 pm

We have the greatest officers who deserve our support. Be safe out there!

AGS Jun 11, 2013 - 6:46 pm

The city wanted section eight. The city invited crime in. They get what they deserve. The city has gone down hill since the last housing boom. Now the politicians are selling some sugar coated words so the givers can give more and the takers can ride the system. So sad.

LLAB Jun 12, 2013 - 12:12 am

Almost 2,000 section 8 vouchers in Antioch. Population 105,000. They know what they need to do!

RickCendejas Jun 12, 2013 - 11:06 am

Ha ha. I don’t even live in Antioch but I can recognize a sinking ship from the shore. I can just as fast and easily go to Concord from where I live. Give your money until it hurts LLAB and City of Antioch residents. You can’t fix this problem by throwing money from TAXES at it. And LLAB, it’s easy to call somebody a “dirt bag” when your hiding behind a moniker. Just a return thought. #NoNewTaxes
