The Antioch Unified School District broke ground Monday on its first phase of the $56 million renovation and modernization of Antioch High School thanks to the passage of Measure B with 62.8% approval in 2012.

Phase 1 includes demolition of the track, field and bleachers along with lead abatement on the existing home bleachers which is set to begin July and will last 6-months into December.

Phase 1b includes a two-story library and administrative building while Phase 1c is a cafeteria, classroom, library modernization.

Monday was all smiles as years of hard work paid off and ground was broken on the field to kick off construction which overall, will go through 2016.

“We had to run it a second time around, the word got out and many members of the community said how could it not pass and people got involved. Once people got involved it ended up passing at 63%,” said Principal Louie Rocha. “For our seniors, I feel bad for them because they known this passed and worked on passing this bond measure and they did not get the experience to play in the facility.”

Rocha estimated that it will not be until mid-year when the stadium is open for soccer and at that time the stadium will be open for business

“It’s been a long time coming and a lot of excitement for everyone, “ said Rocha.

AUSD Superintendent Donald Gill thanked all the volunteers and the community for helping the Measure pass.

“It was about 5-years ago that Louie and I were enjoying the 4th of July celebration and we discussed what we and the entire school at Antioch Highs School would need to take it to the next level. One of the things that came up was the renovation and renewal of Antioch high School,” said Gill. “I cannot thank the voters enough for the support they gave all of us. When we got knocked down once, it was hard to get up and do it again with the hope and anticipation that voters would see this differently and they did so we need to thank all the citizens and volunteers.

Measure B Overview

Measure B is a $56.5 million school bond which will allow the District to renovate and modernize Antioch High School buildings and classrooms, in multiple phases, so that the 59-year-old building can continue to serve the community. The Antioch Unified School District bond measure passed November 6, 2012. Bond measure funds are monitored by an independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee comprised of local residents.

Why were they allowed to cut down that beautiful old tree at the corner of L Street and West 18th. I would have thought they would not legally be able to.

Sounds like more BS to me. A pure waste of money. seriously a 2 story admin / library that NO ONE will ever use, A student plaza … that supposed to keep students on your “closed campus” ? Athletic stadium for a horrid program that has one hell of a losing streak. Oh and lets not forget the classroom modernization A.K.A the Rocha mural funding. About 2 to 3 years ago a school district in San Jose scored a private donation of $30,000 in new computers, tablets, and other modern devices, if you where to give that to the AUSD they would claim they never received half of it. Seriously does the AHS video production class even have a green screen yet ? probably not …
